A musician’s body of work often speaks for itself and speaks loudest by those influenced by the musician’s work. Reggie Parker, a gifted and anointed bass player has been a staple of New York gospel for years. Reggie’s grooves can be heard on many of Bishop Hezekiah Walker’s albums, James Hall & Worship and Praise, and a host of others. He has inspired countless musicians and bass players, as noted by looking over his Facebook page.
On August 20, 2013, Mr. Parker released his debut album ‘SnapShots’. The CD release party was held at The Social Butterfly in Brooklyn. A nice crowd of family, friends, and well wishers were in attendance to celebrate Reggie’s achievement. The son of the Late Reverend Joe L. Parker, Reggie is the product of a godly heritage and upbringing. Reggie’s relationship with God was the catalyst for the CD coming to fruition. “God spoke to me and said I gave you a gift and you’re not using it, so I listened to His voice and decided I have to do something with this gift.”
The result of Reggie’s obedience is a masterful project showing the versatility of the bass guitar. A thorough mix of genres and grooves putting the bass “back in the forefront”, as Reggie would say. ‘SnapShots’ provides an old school feel with a present day flare. A touching song on the album is ‘Hugging the Wind’ featuring Reggie’s three kids; Kayla, Serenity, and Joel Parker. As the saying goes, ‘the fruit does not fall far from the tree’, the young Parkers hold their own on their musical debut.
The song ‘Diva’ is a catchy funk/r & b influenced track for the independent and stylish women in the world. ‘Diva’ features the vocals of Ms. Yolanda Renee a Queens native, who has sung background vocals for Lauryn Hill. The title track ‘SnapShots’ is a neo-soul/funk/jazz inspired tune that captivates the listener. Reggie’s signature red 4-string bass thumps out an undeniable groove that carries the song.
Your talent will entertain people. Your gift will change them
All the music and lyrics were written by Reggie with some of the songs having a co-author. A testament of the powerful gift God has placed inside Reggie. The album has encouraging messages weaved all the way through, while making you nod your head. Reggie wrote a wonderful ballad dedication to his wife Simone Parker entitled ‘So Beautiful’ lead by Linny Smith.
‘Snapshots’ takes you on a exciting musical journey, with young talent from New York City as well as some seasoned veterans. Reggie does not disappoint on his debut album, showing the true breadth of his skills on the bass. ‘Snapshots’ is an excellent addition to his already timeless body of work.
