Learn about roadside springs here in Pennsylvania today (30 October) during a free webinar by the Penn State Water Resources Extension. The webinar, A Study of Roadside Springs of Pennsylvania, will be presented by Jim Clark and Diane Oleson from the Extension. The webinar is schedule for noon and will last one hour.
Clark and Oleson will discuss the results of a recent Penn State Extension Roadside Spring Study. The research tested 35 roadside springs covering nineteen counties throughout the Commonwealth. Clark will give an introduction and share information on the proper design and construction of private water supply spring systems. Oleson will describe the 2013, study of the roadside springs. The Penn State Ag Analytical Water Lab sampled and analyzed the various springs.
Many assume that since water is freely flowing at a spring, that it is safe to drink. The problem is that, unless you know the source of the water or you test the water, this may or may not be accurate. Ground water – such as water from roadside springs – can be contaminated just like surface water. Boiling can kill bacteria but it should be tested before trusting that water is safe.
