Pundits continue to ask if Republicans are crazy, sociopathic or don’t grasp the magnitude of the consequences for what they are doing if they close government down and allow America to fail to pay its debts. The answer to it all is that they are not crazy, sociopathic and they do know exactly what they are doing and they have been planning this for a long time.
With less than 24 hours until the government shuts down, realize what most of us consider a crisis of huge magnitude, Republicans look at as an opportunity and in this case it is an opportunity to remake the nation more to their liking, decidedly less democratic and considerably more authoritarian. This is the end game of the Right Wing Shock Doctrine that they have been honing since 9-11-1973 when the CIA helped overthrow the Allende government in Chile and place dictator Augusto Pinochet in power.
Chile became Milton Friedman’s personal economic laboratory for tax cuts for the wealthy, cutting social spending, and privatizing everything including the school system. Milton Friedman saw public schools as Socialism. In Milton Friedman’s world everything should be for profit.
Chile was the beginning and now America is the end game. Friedman’s economic ideas about Free Markets and democracy have never been able to exist in a democratic country. It seems to require a dictatorship to force people to accept vast riches for a few and crushing poverty for most of a nations citizens that is the end result of Free Market ideology.
The money behind the Republican strategy comes from David and Charles Koch. They have spent millions creating systems such as ALEC (The American Legislative Exchange Council) as a repository for the legislation that Republicans plan to ram through when they create the crisis they need to have the opportunity, in the disorientation of the crisis to change fundamentally the way America operates.
IRS documents now prove that it was Koch brothers money that was behind Americans for Prosperity when Tim Phillips and others created their own faux populist organization The Tea Party. It is Koch Brothers money that is behind the political whip that leaves Republicans with the no options and no common ground with Democrats to find a compromise over shutting the government down and also the crisis of not raising the debt ceiling and allowing America to default on already existing debts.
Any Republican who dares not support complete intransigence in finding a solution to these impending crises will be threatened with having a primary with a well funded Tea Party candidate thus the necessity for creating this faux populist front. Dick Armey’s Freedom Works operates like a privatized political party to help support Tea Party candidates and give them financial credibility in a money driven political system.
They come in and they take care of fund raising, buying yard signs, bumper stickers and even campaign staffers. The only thing the Tea Party candidate needs to do is just go out and campaign. At the moment, Republicans have spent more attacking Republicans than Democrats have in the current election cycle ending in 2014.
What you need to understand is that the Koch’s don’t hate government, and they will have no problem with big government that uses the Army to access resources like coal, oil and natural gas the world over for them. They will have no qualms about big government that spies on its citizens to make sure we all know our place and will have the militarized police force to enforce the anti-democratic laws, and will have no problem with jailing those who attempt to oppose the Coup D’ Etat over democracy that is the end game of the Koch’s.
The only big government intrusion they recognize and hate are the ones that demand clean air and water and legal protections for average Americans as well as demanding safe work places and fair wages. Democracy to the Koch’s is the autocratic rule of the 1% who are the only ones who will be allowed to vote.
The Koch’s win either way, if Obama caves or gives in to Republicans to avert a shut down and debt ceiling crisis, or if he doesn’t and government shuts down and the economy is wrecked. Elections don’t matter. We have found that out and in 24 hours we will begin to know what cards the Republicans will be able to play but either way this is completely intentional and planned and while we are in a state of shock and anxiety about the future the Republicans will open ALEC’s Pandora’s Box to unleash anti-democratic legislation such as Right to Work, voter suppression laws, laws repealing the EPA, making unions illegal, and ending the Department of Education, and government will be open for business if you have the money to purchase its services.
