In the comedy film “Don Jon,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who is the star, writer and director of “Don Jon”) plays a man named Jon Martello, who is not only addicted to porn but he is also obsessed with having a very masculine physique, so he spends hours bodybuilding in a gym. In an interview published by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Sept. 24, 2013, Gordon-Levitt revealed that he won’t be maintaining the physique he had in “Don Jon” because he’s not interested in bodybuilding in real life.
Gordon-Levitt (who is 32) said, “Bodybuilding is not my thing. I like to play basketball with my friends on the weekends or I’ll ride a bike for some exercise but this character is very vain. He’s very concerned with how he looks. He has a very rigid set of expectations of what a man is supposed to look like.”
Gordon-Levitt, who is on the cover of the October 2013 issue of Men’s Health, told the magazine what he did to transform his body in preparing for his “Don Jon” role: “I put on about 12 pounds. I went to the gym every day for a couple of hours for six months. And I ate and ate and ate. I ate so much food, [but] no fat, no sugar, no dairy, no bread.”
He told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he had more fun training for his 2012 movie thriller “Premium Rush,” in which he played a bike messenger being hunted by someone who wants a package that he has to deliver. “There were four different [stunt] doubles but I rode every day and I rode a lot. I did get pretty decent on two wheels.”
Gordon-Levitt has been getting mostly positive reviews for “Don Jon,” which is his first film as a writer and director. “Don Jon,” which was previously titled “Don Jon’s Addiction,” premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

As previously reported, Gordon-Levitt has explained why he decided not to have any full-frontal nudity in the movie’s sex scenes that he and co-star Scarlett Johansson did together.
In an article published on Sept. 3, 2013, Hollywood Life quoted Gordon-Levitt commenting on why he decided not to go full-frontal: “It would just be distracting. This is not a movie of brutal realism; it’s a comedy and it’s a story. It’s sort of a parable, so there would really be no reason to have any nudity.
“I thought the idea of a guy, who watches too much pornography, and a young woman, who watches too many romantic Hollywood movies, was a hilarious way to ask the question: How do the different kinds of media we consume impact our lives and our love lives?”
Gordon-Levitt found international fame as a co-star on the sitcom “3rd Rock From the Sun,” which was on the air from 1996 to 2011. He has since had a successful transition to a movie career, including critically acclaimed blockbusters such as 2010’s “Inception” and 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Lincoln,” as well as smaller-budgeted films such as 2009’s “(500) Days of Summer” and 2011’s “50/50.”
Curiosity for the movie got a huge boost on the Internet when a red-band “Don Jon” trailer was released on Aug. 26, 2013.
As previously reported, Gordon-Levitt has made a public request for writers, voice actors and illustrators to contribute to short animated films. The short films will be for Pivot, the new cable TV network from Participant Media. Pivot’s target audience is Generation Y (also known as the Millennial Generation), which are people born during the early 1980s to 2000s. Gordon-Levitt’s production company hitRECord, which is developing a still-untitled TV series for Pivot, made the solicitation for contributions on its Tumblr site on Aug. 26, 2013.
Gordon-Levitt also made a solicitation on a YouTube video that was posted on Aug. 26, 2013, for contributions to an animated project that will have the theme “history repeating itself.” Gordon-Levitt explained details about what he is looking for in the animated film. Each film be must historically based and have at least three historically based characters (a prophet, a believer and a doubter) from three specific years (1666, 1910 and 2000).
