After seeing the R-rated comedy “Don Jon”, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays a mid twentys something, a very slickly styled, Jersey ladies’ man.Within the first hour there’s only a few things we really care about in life, Jon’s well suited body, his pad, his cool ride. His family, his religion, his pals, his ladies, and his choice of porn. And most importantly, how long it would be before Jons story morphed into “Saturday Night Fever”. Luckily Don Jon’s persona was smarter than the dancing feet of 1977’s immature Tony Manero.
Except when it comes to virtual x-rated vixens on his computer screen, Jon, “Joseph Gordon-Levitt” wonders how the flesh-and-blood women he meets can ever measure up. Reducing women, to nothing but sex objects, including his girlfriend, Barbara, played by “Scarlett Johansson”, who meanwhile longs for the romantism she sees protrayed in Hollywood humorous relationship movies.
There are moments though, where we want to believe that Jon’s a mental case, like he’s got beautifiul, vulumptious, naked. Scarlett Johansson in his bed, and he takes a break from love making, to look at scants on internet porn?’ Probably Jon’s way of retreating from a a real woman, having real sex, in a real relationship, instead conquering a fantacy world where he can be more in control of his male sexuality, than he actually is.
“Don Jon”, starring “Joseph Gordon-Levitt”, proves to be a good fit for directing as well as screenplay writing debut for “Joseph Gordon-Levitt”, as well. And as far as his co-star, the talented actress “Scarlett Johansson” in this film her character’s a bright, beautiful, good old fashioned girl. Brought up on romantic Hollywood movies, with every intention of finding her ultimate Prince Charming. Namely one Jon Martello,”Joseph Gordon-Levitt” who is a modern day Clark Gable, a strong, good looking, old fashioned guy. Except with his pals who call him Don Jon due to his ability to sway a different woman in the sack every Friday and Saturday Night.
Both characters feel genuine and “Don Jon” belivably, is an authenticly, current funny, smart whitty romance. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson have given us two terrific protrayals. In a smart film with a lot of heart, with some very funny moments, in this offbeat movie.
“Don Jon”, also stars, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza and Brie Larson and Glenne Headly, among other talented Jersey born actors.
See this perfect gem “Don Jon” this weekend!
