After gaining 60 pounds during her first pregnancy, Jessica Simpson, 33, approached her second in a much more mindful way. Her son, Ace Knute, with fiance’ Eric Johnson, was born in June and soon after Simpson was ready to start losing the weight she had gained.
In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Simpson said, “I didn’t gain as much weight in my second pregnancy, but I still gained a lot of weight. Any woman, dealing with their body after pregnancy, you look at yourself and you’re like, ‘What just happened to me?’”
After giving birth to her daughter, Maxwell back in May of 2012, Jessica Simpson signed a contract to become a Weight Watchers spokesperson. Not only did she lose a tremendous amount of weight on their program, she credits them for helping her take a more mindful healthy approach toward food during her second pregnancy and continues to use their point system today.
“Going into my second pregnancy, I was just like, ‘Oh, I can’t eat the whole cake. I can just eat a piece of cake,” says Simpson. “I didn’t limit myself, and I definitely was not on a diet during my pregnancy but I did stay active and had Maxwell to chase around because she turned one and started walking, so I was a running pregnant woman.”
Simpson went onto say, “An indulgence for me is like, ice cream, so I can have a Skinny Cow for four points, and I know that that’ll be the sugar that I want that day. Today we just had an eight point lunch, and it was faux spicy chicken sandwich from Wendy’s but it wasn’t from Wendy’s-we made it in a healthy way.”
In addition, Simpson is also burning calories by breastfeeding, which she says has been, “amazing” although “it’s not one of my favorite things in the world.” She’s also working with a trainer four days per week, doing resistance training and making sure to take 12,000 steps per day by using a pedometer. Weight Watchers also offers workout kits, check out their Belly, Butt and Thigh kit here. Check out their fun Punch Workout Kit here.
“Eric always goes on a long walk with me,” said Simpson. “I really do think as a mom we can get really caught up and not take time for ourselves, and this is a way for me to take time for myself and it definitely makes me a happier mom.”
“I’m taking it week by week so I don’t get frustrated with myself. If I had a long-term goal, and that’s all I thought about, I think it would set me back more. So I really, every week, try to make sure I stick with my points and get four workouts in. That’s my goal this week, and I hope that I can lose from that. If not, I’m going to keep on going and try it the next week. So far, so good.”
