The first bout of Franky Panky 2013’s 2nd day – Tallahassee’s Capital Punishment vs Ithacha’s League of Women Rollers, might’ve also been the tournament’s toughest bout to watch. Not because it was another blowout in a long line of blowouts (Ithaca would take it: 129-260), but because I love both teams. Tallahassee is a FL team, so I have to rep for the state. (At least until the Tantrums invite South River, NJ’s (fictional) Toxic AvengeHERs to compete.) Ithaca though, is the League of Women Rollers, a league name so great that their equally fantastic team name, the SufferJets, is almost overkill. I can’t stress enough how awesome those names are, so I’ll just skip straight to the excitement.
Immediately noticeable was how Ithaca must have taken note of the brutal beat-down Tampa had laid on them, only to decide to pay it forward to Tallahassee. Ithaca’s pack covering Tallahassee’s jammers completely; helping to draw cut penalties left and right. Ithaca’s Cold War making out like a bandit when fellow blockers Cam Arrow and Momo-A-Gogo goated Tallahassee’s Trailer Thrash; neutralizing Thrash’s powerjam (28-69). Tallahassee’s La Voodoo being Capital Punishment’s only jammer able to withstand Ithaca’s shots and also managing to score (39-72).
Ithaca’s League of Women Roller’s would remain too strong for Tallahassee though. Cam Arrow proving to be just as adept at scoring as she is with laying jammers out (40-82). Gunder n Lightning showing twirling to be an effective defensive strategy when skating through a pack (40-102). At least it is until Capital Punishment’s Great Wall of Gina and Fem Venomous catch up with you at the end of your twirl, at which point you’re sent for another one; this time one not under your own control. All this leading up to the half closing with Tallahassee trailing 40-111.
Ithaca/Tallahassee’s 2nd half showing just how skilled the SufferJets’ jammers are. Not just because Ha Ha Hatchet killed it by recommencing the action with a powerjam (44-139). But because after a makeshift Tallahassee powerjam (La Voodoo scoring a grand slam while Cold War was sidelined repairing her skate), Ithaca’s defense began filling up the penalty box (49-139). That said, even as Capital Punishment’s Zombie Vicious (53-142) and Great Wall of Gina (60-154)were making gains for Tallahassee, Ithaca’s jammers were too. At the same time. Only without any support.
All of which made Gunder n Lightning’s next powerjam even more damning (60-178). As Capital Punishment’s defenses just couldn’t hold the SufferJets, no matter how hard they tried; as Frozen Tundra found out when she tried to hold Cam Arrow to no avail (60-198).
A reminder of their bout against Philly, Tallahassee again seemed to succeed whenever they started skating fast. Whenever their pack challenged Ithaca to catch up to either it or Gina, Capital Punishment was clearly comfortable and in control (66-231). Negligible gains of course, though such power plays did seem to throw the League of Women Rollers for a loop, leading to a pretty damaging followup Great Wall powerjam (91-235).
Their backs firmly against the wall, Tallahassee ended the bout swinging. Zombie Vicious repaying Ithaca for all her previous shutout jams while Trailer Thrash and Brat knocked Gunder n Lightning around (102-242).
The bout saving the best for last, with perhaps what was the most technical jam seen yet. With just two beautifully composed walls, each one holding the other team’s jammer in check. No quick inside lines here. In fact, Gunder n Lightning was half a lap in before she made lead. A lead that brought Ithaca to a 129-260 win over Tallahassee.
