A man could receive a life sentence after being found guilty for the 2011 robbery and murder of a 31-year-old man, according to Thursday afternoon news release from the Jackson Police Department.
It took a Madison County Circuit Court jury about an hour of deliberation to return guilty verdicts on Damarcus Cole, 27, in the Oct. 2011 murder and robbery of Demetris Daniel Cole. Police said the two men were not related.
Police said the jury found Damarcus Cole guilty of felony murder and especially aggravated robbery following a two-day trial. Damarcus Cole will be held pending a 10 a.m., Nov. 12 sentencing Madison County Circuit Court.
Damarcus Cole is facing a life sentence (60 years) for felony murder and 15 to 25 years for the especially aggravated robbery conviction.
Police said shortly before 5 a.m., on Oct. 29, 2011, the department received a call about a shooting inside an apartment, located at 274 Moize Cut-Off Road. Inside Damarcus Cole’s apartment, Demetris Cole had been shot multiple times during a robbery.
Demetris Cole was transported by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, where he died from his injuries two days later, on Oct. 31, 2011. Funeral services and his burial were held on Nov. 4, 2011.
Police said on Nov. 3, 2011, the day before Demetris Cole’s funeral, Demarcus Cole robbed the Henderson Food and Fuel, located at 3825 U.S. 45 in Henderson. He pleaded guilty in April 2012 and was sentenced to six years in prison.
In the case of the homicide of Demetris Cole, police said initially, Damarcus Cole told investigators he had picked up two strangers in the Old Hickory Blvd. area in the early morning hours of Oct. 29 and brought them to his apartment. He said that they robbed and shot Demetris Cole and then forced Darmarcus Cole to drive them away. The strangers later released him unharmed, Damarcus Cole told the investigators.
During the investigation, police determined that Damarcus Cole was involved, along with the two men, in the robbery and murder of Demetris Cole. Cole was indicted on Jan. 28 of this year, 15 months after the incident.
Police said the investigation of the incident is ongoing to determine the identities of the other two men.
One man was described as being a black male with a light complexion, standing at 6 feet tall. He wore eyeglasses and had a short hair cut. The other man was also described as being a black male, but with a dark complexion. He was between 5 feet and 5 inches tall and 5 feet and 7 inches tall. Both men were thought to be between the ages of 20 and 25.
