The holiday season is upon us which means dessert after dessert after dessert. But this does not give an excuse for you to gorge yourself. You can still continue your healthy eating. You know that cream cheese filled pumpkin roll that you love? Limit yourself to a small slice. Better yet, make your own so you know it is low in fat. This will help you continue your healthy eating.
It is hard to control yourself especially with all the great food on Thanks Giving and Christmas, as well as this whole holiday season. But here are some key things to ask yourself that will help maintain your healthy eating as you are about to heap your plate up with all of those starches and sweets:
- How much of my plate am I actually going to eat?
- Which of these things should I eat less of?
- Do I have the basic food groups?
- How much fat is in each thing?
During the holiday season, thinking about fat or carbs is the last thing you want to think about. But it will help you in the long run if you continue your healthy eating. If you follow this article’s advice, then you won’t lose all of that hard work you did to get you to where you are right now. Remember:
- Only fill your plate with as much food as you can eat. This will help prevent from over eating. Many times if someone loads up their plate, half way through eating their stomach is full but their mind tells them to keep eating. Subconsciously our minds are thinking ‘This is the last time for a year, until the next holiday season, that I can eat this food, I better stock up.’ It isn’t like you are going in to hibernation. You don’t need to eat twice the amount you should.
- Eat slow. By eating slow you are giving your stomach enough time to give signal to your brain to let it know you are full. This comes in handy especially around the holiday season.
- Try to stay healthy. Don’t stop your healthy eating. You can load your plate up with more greens and veggies so you are full mainly off of that. This will help with the in take of starch and fatty foods as well.
- When it comes to dessert, less is more. Instead of going up for seconds and thirds of your favorite pie, take a smaller slice. Split the normal slice you usually have in 3rds. That way, when/if you decide you want more, you won’t be consuming more than one piece.
The last thing to remember is the age old saying. Preach it to yourself and repeat it over and over during this holiday season. “A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.” This phrase will help your hunger pains a little during this holiday season.
