Walking around late night around Tokyo, we decided to stop and grab a snack and some drinks. Lo and behold, we ended up at the famed Capcom X Pasela bar! For those who are uninitiated to the bar, its a themed cafe, thus all the drinks and menu items are either named or inspired by Capcom games and characters. The cafe was filled with various decor from Phoenix Wright, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, Darkstalkers, Megaman, and other titles in the Capcom universe. They also had game consoles setup for people to play while they wait for their order.
Sitting down we decided to get some of their Street Fighter and Monster Hunter infused drinks, as well as some snacks. The tables around us were varied in customers, one table was all guys, one all girls, and one mixed. Our Street Fighter Guile and Akuma drinks came out first. The Guile drink was a green lime based alcoholic drink, kind of like a tame mojito. It wasn’t very good. The Akuma drink was a blackberry vodka cocktail that you mixed with Red Bull. This drink turned out much better, and had a glowing plastic ice cube to add to the “evil intent” in the drink.
The second round of drinks and snacks came out next. The Ryu drink was totally not what we expected. It was a fruit liquor mixed with a yogurt drink. Don’t get me wrong, the drink was good, but totally not what I picture being inspired by the world warrior. The coolest drink by far was the Monster Hunter drink. I wish I had a before shot to go with the after shot I took. It starts off as a clear cocktail with some jelly at the bottom. You are given a dish with pink sour cotton candy. You dump the candy into the drink and mix to complete the drink. Then it magically changes the drink dark blue and fizzes like Alka Seltzer. The drink itself was pretty good too. We had ordered some fried tofu and takoyaki to snack on with our drinks and they were your average fare.
The real highlight was yet to come though. Once we received our full order, the waiter and waitress appeared before us and made an announcement of a fight about to break out. Then they both dropped into fighting stances. The waitress started throwing out sonic booms, and the waiter answered back with hadokens. The battle ended with the waitress whiffing a flash kick and the waiter answering with a shoryuken! The waitstaff will act out a skit based on your order as part of the service for the cafe. Later on the waiter and waitress came back to act out a case from Phoenix Wright, complete with the bartender as the judge and objection signs. The table next to us ordered a Resident Evil brain cake, but we didn’t stick around long enough to see that skit.
For a themed cafe, the prices for everything were fairly reasonable. It was more expensive than if you found a regular bar or cafe, but you’re paying for the show and ambiance of the place. Other themed cafes, maid, AKB48 and Gundam are generally much much more expensive. The drinks and food are more novelty than quality, but if you are looking to have some fun while getting your drink on, you really can’t beat a place like Capcom X Pasela Bar.
