U.S. Reps. Paul Broun, M.D., Jack Kingston and Lynn Westmoreland, all Georgia Republicans, signed on to a letter on Thursday to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, warning the Senate Republicans that if they vote in favor of the continuing resolution (CR) to fund government and defund the Affordable Care Act (ACA or Obamacare), they will be de facto supporting Obamacare.
The Stability, Security and Fairness Act was penned by Georgia Republican Rep. Tom Graves. The resolution was passed and supported by all House Republicans but not one House Democrat.
Some conservatives demand now that Republicans in the Senate vote against cloture because it would allow Democrats to amend the bill with funding for ACA, and pass it with 51 votes.
“The fight to stop ObamaCare now turns to the Senate,” the letter reads. “As you are well aware, it is highly likely that Majority Leader Harry Reid will move to amend the House-passed CR and remove the language from the bill that defunds and delays ObamaCare before sending it back to the House. As you are also aware, such a motion can only proceed if three-fifths of the Senate invokes cloture and allows this amendment process to begin. Simply put, the only chance that Senator Reid has to pursue this course of action is if six or more Republican Senators join the Democrats in voting to invoke cloture.
“Therefore, it shall be our policy to regard any cloture vote that gives Senator Reid a green light to reinstate ObamaCare into this CR the same as a vote for ObamaCare itself.”
All the controversy threatens that no bill will pass before October 1st, and funding for government programs will not be provided.
The letter was sent to the Senate last night; it was authored by Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.), and signed by 21 House Republicans:
Dave Schweikert (R.-Ariz.), Charles Boustany, M.D. (R.-La. ), John Culberson (R.-Texas ), Steve King (R.-Iowa), Ted Yoho DVM (R.-Fla. ), Thomas Massie (R.-Ky.), Lynn Westmoreland (R.- Ga. ), Jack Kingston (R.-Ga.), Jeff Duncan (R.-S.C.), Paul Broun M.D. (R.-Ga. ), Ron DeSantis (R.-Fla.), Michele Bachmann (R.-Minn.), Matt Salmon (R.-Ariz.), Steve Stockman (R.-Texas), Louie Gohmert (R.-Texas), Walter Jones (R.-N.C.), Scott Garrett (R.-N.J.), Scott Perry (R.-Pa.), Mark Meadows (R.-N.C.), Tim Huelskamp (R.-Kan.).
“The House of Representatives has acted according to the will of the American People by putting a stop to ObamaCare in this CR, and it is time for the Senate to follow suit,” continue House Republicans. “Therefore, it is incumbent upon every Republican Senator to remain untied until the House-passed CR is agreed to, without amendments, and sent to President Obama for his signature or veto.
“The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated. If Senator Reid is allowed to amend this CR and send it back to the House only days before a government shutdown, it will be because some Senate Republicans failed to honor the commitment they have all made to stop ObamaCare. As your colleagues and on behalf of our constituents, we ask that you not allow that to happen.”
President Barack Obama already said he will not sign a bill that defunds his signature law. Also, the most important parts of the health care law remain funded even if the government shuts down.
