This is a huge week if you’re a Homeland fan. Not only does Season 3 launch tonight, but The Simpsons kicks off its 25th season with a parody of the hit Showtime series, and Season 2 has already arrived on Blu-Ray in spectacular form.
Season 3 resumes the action two months after Season 2’s attack on Langley, with the CIA simultaneously targeting the responsible parties and still searching for the fugitive Brody (Damian Lewis). Saul (Mandy Patinkin), as the acting director of the Agency, finds himself in hot water when a Senate investigation into CIA practices is launched. And Carrie (Claire Danes) is in even more jeopardy, when her affair with Brody becomes very public knowledge, and her continued insistence on his innocence lands her in a psych ward.
The new season also injects some new blood both on and off-screen. In front of the camera, award-winning actor, playwright and screenwriter Tracy Letts plays a high-powered Senator, and Shaun Toub (Iron Man) appears as an Iranian intelligence officer and old acquaintance of Saul. In the writers’ room, scribes joining this cycle include James Yoshimura (Homicide: Life on the Street), Patrick Harbinson (24), and Will Bromell, son of the late Henry Bromell, who recently won a posthumous Emmy for his work on the show.
An hour before the Homeland premiere, FOX’s The Simpsons is lovingly poking fun at the show with its own season opener, entitled “Homerland.” After Homer returns from a business trip acting strange, Lisa gets suspicious and enlists the help of edgy Carrie Mathison-esque FBI agent Annie Crawford. Annie is voiced by Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), who previously played Principal Skinner’s love interest Calliope Juniper in the Season 22 episode “Flaming Moe.” You can check out photos from “Homerland” in the gallery included with this article, and watch a promo spot with the embedded media player.
Earlier this week, FOX Home Entertainment released Homeland: The Complete Second Season on Blu-Ray and DVD. The three-disc Blu-Ray set will please any of the show’s die-hard fans. In addition to impressive video and audio presentation for all 13 episodes, the special features here are few, but they’re great. You’ll learn about the show’s time filming in Israel, how the cast and crew put together the Season 2 finale (obvious spoiler alert!) and enjoy a video diary courtesy of series star Damian Lewis. The icing on the cake is an “exclusive story extension” that leads into Season 3. Homeland: The Complete Second Season does what all TV on home video sets should do: enhance the viewing experience. If you don’t have your copy yet, you can get it now on Amazon by clicking here.
The Simpsons episode “Homerland” airs tonight at 8 PM ET/PT on FOX. The Season 3 premiere of Homeland follows at 9 PM ET/PT on Showtime. Season 2 is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD.
