On Tuesday October 1st, Hennessy V.S held a special dinner with actor & recording artist Mack Wilds, to celebrate the release of his new album, “New York: A Love Story.” The dinner was held at Catch in NYC and guests were treated to a three course meal and Hennessy V.S specialty cocktails.
We caught up with the “Run It” artist at dinner to discuss his new album, the future of his acting career and comparisons to Drake.
Examiner: You’re certainly living up to your stage name Mack Wilds, tell us which tracks on the album the ladies will love?
Mack Wilds: The ladies are going to love “Don’t turn me down” and “Sober Up” definitely.
Examiner: And what about the guys? What tracks do you think the fellas will be feeling the most?
Mack Wilds: I’d say, “Wild Things” and “Duck Sauce”.
Examiner: Cool, you recently had a show with Hot 97 right here in your hometown NYC, how was that experience?
Mack Wilds: Ah man that show was crazy, the HOT 97 family always shows me so much love!
Examiner: I read an interview where you spoke about music being your first love, but to the rest of the world we know you as an star actor from hits shows such as The Wire and 90210. When did you know that it was time for you to follow your passion for music?
Mack Wilds: I just had a gut feeling that it was my time, and I went with it.
Examiner: So how does that work, I’m sure you still get offered tv and film roles? Have you had to turn down any roles to pursue your music career?
Mack Wilds: Yes, I still get offered roles, but I’m focused on my music and because of it I’ve had to turn down work to fully commit, which is my choice and I’m fine with that.
Examiner: (As our main course arrives) I see we’re both fans of the Lobster mashed potatoes, are you a foodie? Better yet, do you cook?
Mack Wilds: I am, and I definitely cook. Both of my parents are great in the kitchen, especially my mom who’s Dominican, I mean she had to be a great cook. I grew up with a lot of chefs in my family.
Examiner: Ok, So if we were in your kitchen right now, what would you make?
Mack Wilds: I love throwing together left overs and making sandwiches, I’d probably take something like left over chicken, some lettuce and tomato and make a club sandwich, trust me it would be good.
Examiner: Ok, that does sound pretty good. Now let’s jump back into the music. Considering the fact that most will see you as an actor turned rapper, how do you feel about being compared to Drake, what he’s done with his career and your transition?
Mack Wilds: When I think about the comparisons It’s fine, I could see if the comparisons were about someone who’s not doing anything, Drake is doing his thing, so for me I’m just taking it with stride.
Examiner: Cool. So tell me working with Salam Reemi had to be super dope. He’s so talented and seasoned in the game. Are there any really cools stories about how a track came together and what the experience was like working with him?
Mack Wilds: Yeah, one day we’re I’m the studio and he tells me “Why don’t you do this, and I started singing “Remember the time” over a beat, He’s just talented like that, I mean it didn’t really start out as much, but afterwards when we heard it, we definitely wanted to keep it, and it ended up becoming a dope track on the album, but it originally started out as just a fluke.
Examiner: Wow, that’s crazy! So what’s next for you Mack?
Mack Wilds: I’m performing live on the Wendy Williams show this week, so make sure to check that out and I’m headlining Hot 97’s “Who’s Next” concert so get your tickets now!
Examiner: Very cool. So let me ask you one last, really important question. Personally what’s the goal for you with this debut album? How do you want people to feel when they hear it and ultimately how do you want the music industry to receive you?
Mack Wilds: I want people to feel what I felt. I want them to get that crazy feeling you have the first time you see a beautiful girl at the pizza shop for the first time. The true essence of what it was like for me during the days when I was growing up as a kid in New York. Classic New York City. And I want the world to know that there’s a new kid on the block, and I’m here to stay.
Examiner: Thanks for your time Mack and thanks for a super dope evening, congratulations on the album.
