In a press release this morning, The Anti-Aging Institute of California endorses green coffee bean extract (GCB) as a means of weight loss, about ten percent of body weight, on average. According to the release:
Recent studies on green coffee bean extract have been quite positive in their results. One study, which was published in the “Journal of Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity,” revealed that the extract may be an extremely powerful weight loss supplement.
PubMed has this in an article about green coffee beans and weight management, “The World Health Organization predicts there will be 2.3 billion overweight adults in the world by 2015, and more than 700 million of them will be obese.”
Because green coffee bean extract is on the radar, I spoke with several women battling weight gain due to a non-functioning thyroid. Here are their responses:
Examiner: Has it been difficult to lose or maintain weight since your thyroid gland has stopped working?
Donna: I am struggling to lose the weight. In the beginning, my weight started climbing about two to three pounds a week.
Sharon: I was near my ideal weight when my thyroid began to stop functioning. I quickly gained 25 pounds.
Examiner: What, if anything, have you tried to lose the weight?
Donna: When I first heard about the green coffee bean extract supplements, I ordered two bottles. I’ve been taking them for about three months now. I haven’t changed my diet, but I have lost six pounds. This is significant because I was gaining every month.
Sharon: I started taking the green coffee bean extract about five weeks ago. So far, I have lost eight of the 25 pounds I gained. This may not sound like much, but before, I couldn’t even lose one pound.
Examiner: Do you have more energy while taking the GCB extract?
Donna: Yes, I do feel more energized.
Sharon: I haven’t noticed a big increase in energy, but maybe I will after I take them a bit longer.
According to the press release from the Anti-Aging Institute of California:
The weight loss was not attributed to the caffeine that is contained in coffee but rather the chlorogenic acid in the unroasted beans. Chlorogenic acid is a heat-sensitive compound that is lost when the coffee berry is roasted, but green coffee beans have not been roasted and so contain the full amount of this special compound. The chlorogenic acid interferes with lipogenisis, or fat formation, and helps balance blood sugar. Because it blocks fat absorption in the intestine, many people experience rapid and dramatic weight loss.
The information from studies revealed that green coffee beans help lower cholesterol and high blood pressure. The beans have many antioxidants, provide an energy boost, control hunger, improve blood flow and burns visceral fat.
Green coffee beans don’t appear to have any unwanted side effects, but speaking to a family physician is recommended before taking the supplements. The caffeine in the beans may be a bit much for some people, especially those for whom caffeine makes them jittery.
