With the grind of training camp and four weeks of preseason outings officially in the rear view mirror, judgment day was finally upon the NFL on Saturday.
As the clock ticks down towards the onset of the 2013 season—rung in by the defending champion Baltimore Ravens and Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos on Thursday, Sept. 5—each of the game’s 32 teams made their final personnel moves to set up their respective 53-man rosters.
In respect to the Green Bay Packers, 22 players were asked to turn in their playbooks on Saturday, headlined by quarterback Vince Young, running back Alex Green and tight end DJ Williams.
Of those who, at least for the time being, will be present and accounted for when the green and gold face off against San Francisco in their season-opening matchup on Sunday, Sept. 8, defensive end Johnny Jolly and several undrafted free agents made the cut.
The 30-year-old Jolly, who missed the past three seasons upon being suspended by the NFL for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, last suited up for the Packers in 2009, when he started in each of the team’s 16 outings while registering 39 tackles (24 solo), one sack, one interception and two fumble recoveries.
For his career, the 6’3”, 310-pound Jolly, selected in the sixth round (183rd overall) by Green Bay in the 2006 NFL draft, has amassed 114 tackles, 17 passed defended and two sacks in 48 contests.
While Jolly will be making his return to the gridiron, the handful of players who will get their first taste of NFL regular season action include, among others, undrafted rookie outside linebacker Andy Mulumba; seventh-round draft pick and inside linebacker Sam Barrington; undrafted safety Chris Banjo; and tight end Brandon Bostick, formerly of the Packers’ practice squad.
In turn, while Young, the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, bid adieu to Titletown, B.J. Coleman, selected by Green Bay in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL draft out of Tennessee-Chattanooga, remains the lone quarterback on the Packers roster behind Aaron Rodgers.
