Many families choose outdoor settings when taking family photos. Whether you are taking fall photos, holiday photos or photos for no special reason, it’s fun to gather the family together with the beauty of nature for your backdrop.
Here are some great places to take family photos in Lynchburg and the surrounding area. A few are only available seasonally, but most are available all year and change with the seasons.
In May, the LOVEwork sculpture, sponsored by Discover Lynchburg through an arts and culture grant by the City of Lynchburg, was created at Percival’s Island.
Ever since the creation, families have flocked to the riverfront for photos. Recently, a second LOVEwork sculpture was added beside the Craddock-Terry Hotel, just off Main Street. This sculpture is a giant red shoe, a cute backdrop for family photos.
The Awareness Garden at the Blackwater Creek Bikeway and Anne Spencer’s garden are two favorites of the Central Virginia Public Gardens. Both are wonderful locations for family photos, offering beauty in any season.
The waterfall at Hollins Mill Park is a beautiful backdrop any season of the year. Hollins Mill Park is located at 1711 Hollins Mill Road. There are also picnic tables and you can access the Blackwater Creek Bikeway and Point of Honor Trail.
If you follow the RiverWalk Trail at Percival’s Island, you’ll come to the bridge crossing from the island to Amherst County. The bridge offers great river views for family photos.
Lynchburg’s parks are perfect for family photos. The bridge at Peaks View Park is a nice location with a background of trees and the flowing creek.
Riverside Park offers several places that are great locations for family photos. The Play Core playground features a train theme. Gather the family on the train for a fun photo. Head to the Overlook for a family photo with the mountains in the background. The gazebo garden is another beautiful location at Riverside Park. For a fun photo, pose the kids on the fishes at the Sprayground.
Ivy Creek Park offers beautiful views. Gather on the fishing pier for photos with the lake in the background or pose on the nature playground for a fun photo shoot.
Old City Cemetery offers a beautiful setting for family photos. During spring and summer, the antique roses are in bloom. In late summer, the butterfly garden and lotus pond are beautiful settings. The old-fashioned swing near the chapel is also a favorite place for photos.
Monument Terrace on Church Street rises as a memorial to the war heroes of the Lynchburg area. The Dough Boy statue stands on Church Street with the steps rising behind to the Lynchburg Museum on Court Street. Large family groups can stagger their members by height on the steps at Monument Terrace.
For fun backdrops, choose the mural at the Academy of Fine Arts, the CityArts mosaic across from Amazement Square or the mural in front of the Academy of Music. All three are very colorful so wear solid colors.
Pumpkin patches and corn mazes offer the perfect setting for fall photos. Smith’s Pumpkin Patch on Fort Avenue opened last week and is open daily through Halloween. Ravenelle Corn Maze at Russell Farms will open in Forest on Oct. 5 and remain open on the weekends through Nov. 3.
Drive a little bit to visit Morris Orchard in Monroe for photos with the hay bale creations. You can also get great photos at Silver Creek and Seaman’s Orchard in Tyro or the Johnny Appleseed statue at Johnson’s Orchard in Bedford.
The Peaks of Otter Lodge offers beautiful scenery during any season. Sharp Top Mountain can be seen from in front of the lake. Families often pose on the bridge at the Peaks too.
Take a hike or ride the bus to the top of Sharp Top Mountain for great outdoor photos. There is beauty in every turn in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Take family photos with distant mountains in the background from the top of Candlers Mountain. Visit Snowflex and walk or drive up the gravel road to the LU Monogram. The views are breathtaking.
Head to Cascade Falls just past the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway. A short hike will take you to the waterfall, a beautiful setting for family photos.
Gather in front of your house or near a favorite tree in your yard for an ever-changing family photo setting. Each season is new with flowers, shrubs and trees blooming in the spring and summer, leaves changing colors in the fall and your holiday decorations near Christmas.
Pose in front of Point of Honor or another historic location. Gather in front of your church or your child’s school to tell the story of your family in photos.
Wherever you choose to gather your family for photos, record the days as your children grow for precious memories to enjoy later.
