Michael Pate (Electric Black Horse) interviewed by David S. Grant
That song just comes on like a pack of wild strippers. – Michael Pate discussing his band’s new song, “Champagne On Ice.”
Michael Pate is the lead vocalist and guitarist for the New York City band, Electric Black Horse. In early 2012 Electric Black Horse released their demo album that featured Michael Pate on all instruments. (You can check out the SleazeRoxx.com interview here.) A year and a half later, Electric Black Horse has four members and is preparing to release their debut, Cheap Party Favors. Michael Pate was gracious enough to take us deep inside the new album, discuss which songs are his favorite to play live, and what to expect November 22 for their record release show at Arlene’s Grocery.
(David S. Grant) Tell us about the new album, favorite tracks? Vision of Cheap Party Favors?
(Michael Pate) The album is entitled, Cheap Party Favors and here’s the official track list:
1. “Stone Foxx” An ass shaking, foot stomping ode to the special ladies that make us feel alive! A classic album opening track!
2. “Champagne On Ice” Unbridled, unrelenting rock that will make you believe again! We draw a line in the sand with this one!
3. “Boys and Girls” A slinky, sexy anthem, sing along/crossover hit, just dripping with anticipation and pomp; the first single and video from the record.
4. “Birthday Bitch” The ultimate kiss off and soon to be alternate birthday dedication classic!
5. “Cheap Party Favors” A sneering, snotty, funky rocker dedicated to every hot mess that ever lived.
6. “Uptown Saturday Night” A boozy, grooving, party-crasher of a song that begs multiple replays.
7. “Koke Rock” A definitive Rock and Roll classic that cannot be denied! This track is one for the ages, a tribute to Rock and Roll itself. Light the fuse and hold on!
As far as a vision goes David, I had 2 alternate titles for this record which are kind of Electric Black Horse “mantras” if you will. The first was, Ye Olde In and Out and the second was Don’t Bore Us, Get to the Chorus. This is a seven song record that clocks in at 25 minutes flat! There is no filler, no jazz explorations, no extended intros, no spoken word reflections, and minimum “wankery.” This record is like the best roller coaster you’ve ever been on: it’s exciting, wild and over before you know it, leaving you wanting only one, true thing: More. We have a classic on our hands and I really believe it will get people excited about Rock and Roll again!
(DSG) In the past year you have performed various venues around the city. What has been most memorable?
(Michael Pate) In the past year we’ve gone as far as Charlotte, NC on up to Boston, MA and every show just gets better and better. We played in Chapel Hill, NC at a little dive called the Cave this past June. The night before we had rocked Richmond, VA and were just high on the response. When it was time for us to go on in Chapel Hill, the place was literally empty. For us, it’s of no consequence….the bartender was there? HEY BARKEEP!! ARE YOU READY TO GET YOUR ASS ROCKED INTO TOMORROW?!?! We just hit the gas and go. Now, the place didn’t magically fill up or anything, but something amazing happened. These 2 guys wandered in and were just staring at us as we played. Just standing there. Blank stares when all of a sudden we kick into “Champagne On Ice” and these guys went BANANAS, just losing their shit, dancing, pumping their fists in the air, getting in our faces just screaming “YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!” They did this for the remainder of our set. When we were done and packing up, one of them came up to our drummer and handed him $60 and told him that he and his buddy had just come back from Iraq and that we were just what they were looking for! They shook our hands and hugged us, high fives. It was awesome. All these fellows wanted to do was rock. I’ll never forget that.
(DSG) I enjoyed the last album and still listen to “Roses” and “Koke Rock”, what is the primary difference between the new album and your debut?
(Michael Pate) Thanks!!! You’ll notice three songs on this record are remakes of songs that appeared on that first outing which, in reality was a glorified demo that featured only me on all instruments with programmed drums. This record is the true debut of a band. Merx Mercado on lead guitar and vocals, JT Hardy on bass guitar and vocals and Shane Considine on drums and vocals and myself on lead vocals and guitar. We all sing on this! If you liked “Koke Rock”, “Birthday Bitch” and “Cheap Party Favors” before…..all I can say is you’ll be blown away. The production was done by Felix McTigue, who while keeping things somewhat modern, took the old school, 60-70’s approach to recording this thing. Guitars and bass turned up loud in a room with a microphone. It’s so sexy and warm sounding; I’m positively giddy for you to hear it!!!!
(DSG) Which songs off the new album kick-ass live?
(Michael Pate) I have to say “Champagne On Ice” is always our #2 in the set because it’s the perfect #2 live song. Possibly ever written. I say that because whatever we open with……”Champagne” seals the deal. That song just comes on like a pack of wild strippers. Like the boulder in “Raiders of the Lost Ark!” It’s undeniable. You can’t stop it; you can only hope to contain it. Good luck on that one. All these songs destroy in the live setting. The record may as well be a set list from a show. Listen to it like that and you’ll get it. FAST!
(DSG) What should we expect for the record release party at Arlene’s Grocery?
(Michael Pate) The start of something amazing for us as a band: A launching pad to the “next level” as they say. We’ve been at it for a bit now; we have an undeniably infectious rock and roll record to let loose on the world, videos that are just ridiculous coming soon and a live show that other acts do not want to follow. Expect all that at the very least for the Arlene’s gig. We don’t disappoint, we don’t half step. It’s going to be a Rock and Roll Fiesta!!!!
(DSG) In our last interview you hoped that Electric Black Horse would “bring sexy back to rock and roll and keep it there.” Is this still the mantra?
(Michael Pate) Absolutely, 100%. That torch is ours and we’re taking it to the top of the mountain! I declare, LEND YOUR EARS AND GIVE UP THAT ASS BECAUSE ELECTRIC BLACK HORSE HAS TAKEN OVER BABY!!!!! ROCK AND ROLL FOREVER!
