Cod liver oil is one of thee most extensively written and researched superfood’s in modern-day history. Few supplements have such rich scientific grounds to stand upon. The following array of articles will slowly but surely touch upon this wonder substance. Dr. Weston Price was one of the classics that made this such a sought after superfood and for very good reason. There aren’t many superfood’s capable of repairing the body and calming inflammation in the same way that cod can.
In this article you will learn about three of the newer research abstracts regarding liver (hepatoprotective) protection, amelioration of acute pneumonia and reduction of pharmaceutical need for rheumatoid arthritis clients by omega-3 fatty acid rich cod liver oil. The author will be writing many parts regarding the health benefits of cod liver oil.
Just a quick notation: This nutritional examiner has no affiliation with any recommendations in any articles. No kick-backs, no money, no nothing. Just honest recommendations for you to leverage more knowledge from. The main product this nutritional examiner currently recommends is Nordic Naturals because they are independently tested for potency and purity. This page will inform you as to the details of it all.
The first study here is regarding immune benefits associated with omega-3 fatty acid profiles. One hypothesized theory for why cod liver oil in particular is an immune benefit is because of the rich vitamin D and A naturally found within it. However this article does not go into those details.
- The immune benefits associated with the optimal intake of dietary fatty acids are widely known. The objective of the present investigation was to elucidate the role of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) food source on acute pneumonia induced by Klebsiella pneumoniae. Three different n-3 PUFA preparations (cod liver oil, Maxigard, and flaxseed oil) were orally supplemented and infection was induced in different groups of experimental mice . . . This study highlights that dietary n-3 PUFA supplementation exerts an overall beneficial effect against acute experimental pneumonia. This mechanism is operative through upregulation of nonspecific and specific immune defenses of the host. (full abstract)
As you may have already noticed if you have read through the authors previous 50 articles, that there are many scientific inquiries into liver protection. Mainly because it has markers that are more notably marked for toxicity exposure as well as the critical role the liver has in overall health. This abstract is on the liver protective nature of cod liver oil against nitrites.
- Abstract Context: Exposure to high levels of nitrites for a prolonged time have adverse health effects on several organs especially the liver due to oxidative properties. Meanwhile, cod liver oil has been reported to ameliorate organ dysfunction in animal models that involve oxidative stress . . . The hepatoprotective effect of cod liver oil was proved by significant reduction of elevated liver enzymes and normal appearance of hepatocytes . . . Discussion and conclusion: Cod liver oil ameliorates sodium nitrite induced hepatic impairment through several mechanisms including attenuation of oxidative stress, blocking MCP-1, reactivation of mitochondrial function and reduction of DNA fragmentation. The pharmaceutical industry currently only produces synthetics that are full of side effects, so it is wise to find a way to reduce the amount required to get the desired effect. Sometimes pharmaceuticals are very much needed to control symptoms to restore some sense of balance to function within the daily bump and grind of reality. Therefore the study below is an example of how to reduce certain medications to improve the functioning of an individual experiencing a chronic disease.
- Objective: To evaluate whether the concomitant consumption of Cod liver oil can reduce the daily dose of Diclofenac Sodium and probably the risk of the side effects which are associated with it in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients . . . Results: A significant decrease (p< 0.05) in the mean VAS pain score from 80.38 ± 6.4 at week 0 to 67.30 ± 5.3 at week 24 was noted in the patients. There was a significant reduction (p<0.05) in mean dose of Diclofenac Sodium consumed from 115.04 ± 24.56 at week 4 to 98.83 ± 22.32 at week 24. Moreover, the percentage of the patients who experienced a ‘Better’ Subjective Response increased from 15.38% at week 4 to 61.53% at week 24 of the treatment follow up. Conclusion: This study revealed that the concurrent use of Cod liver oil which contained n-3 Essential Fatty Acid in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients reduced the mean daily dose of Diclofenac Sodium consumed and probably the incidence of the side effects which were associated with it.
