It’s BACKKKK! The arrival of cooler weather is the perfect time to enjoy Giralda Under the Stars, the alfresco dining experience sponsored by the BID (Business Improvement District), now in its fifth year.
This year, there will be 12 restaurants participating in this event, where restaurants set up tables and chairs on the 100 block of Giralda Avenue, between Ponce Boulevard and Galiano Street. The street is closed to vehicular traffic, creating the perfect opportunity to stroll down restaurant row, enjoying live music and art shows. The event begins at seven p.m. and ends at eleven.
According to Mari Gallet of the BID, the idea for Giralda Under the Stars began in 2008, as a way to battle the recession and bring energy and excitement back to the restaurants in Coral Gables.
“This year, we’re really excited because we have some new events going on,” said Gallet. “We’re going to have an entrance feature, special lighting, a free photo station for event goers and a sampling station of Zacapa rum.”
This year Giralda Under the Stars is being sponsored by Zacapa rum, a high-end, dark, Guatemalan rum. Ron Zacapa rum is distributed by Diageo, a large beverage and spirits company, whose headquarters just moved from Doral into Coral Gables.
There are all kinds of cuisines to choose from at this event- Spanish, Italian, Peruvian, Cuban, Vietnamese, Thai, Mexican and Gastro pub fare. Most of the restaurants participating will be setting up tables outside, but the inside restaurants will also be open.
“I commend the restaurants, because they are the ones who do the heavy lifting,” said Gallet. While the BID is in charge of getting permits, police and closing down the streets, the restaurants arrange to bring their venue outside and provide entertainment.
Talavara will have strolling Mariachis to enliven their Mexican cuisine. The Bar will offer ambient music, Spritz (formerly Spris) will have a D.J. and the Local is presenting live art performances.
The first Friday of the month is also Gallery Night in the Gables, so Giralda Under the Stars offers the perfect opportunity to eat on restaurant row and then hit the galleries to feast on some eye candy.
There will also be a photo station sponsored by University of Southernmost Florida, for event goers who wish to have a photographic memory to remember this special, starry night.
Here’s the list of all the restaurants participating. Reservations are recommended for this popular event.
