We are all aware of the obesity problem in America and it is time to stop talking about it and to start doing something about it. Be a role model for your kids and present physical activity as an important time to take care of your body. Treat it just like anything else that has to be done such as going to school, brushing teeth, or even eating. Find activities you all enjoy and be active as a family. Use these tips to get your family moving.
Play music and dance during cleaning time
It may take a little longer to get the kitchen and family room cleaned, but everyone will have fun. The right music can get anyone up and moving. Feel the music and you won’t even realize you are exercising. Take turns choosing the music. The kids will have a great time showing their parents new dance moves and the parents may be able to show the kids some moves of their own.
Challenge your kids to a friendly sport competition
Whether you are on the basketball court or in the house playing Wii Sports, a parents versus kids match will bring out a friendly competitiveness that will get everyone moving. The kids get a chance to shut the parents down and the parents get a chance to prove they still got it.
Fitness for a cause
Get moving for what you believe in. Maybe you want to help support research for curing an ailment of a family member or friend. Whether it is biking, walking, or running, there are events that support just about every cause. You may even need to train and build endurance for the event which can be done as a family as well.
Have family fitness night
Just as families get together for Sunday dinner, select one evening as family fitness night. Each week a different person plans what the family workout will be. Whether it is rollerblading, hiking, or swimming, it will be lots of fun doing it together.
Learn a new sport together
Try skiing for the first time or learn to play tennis. Join a local fitness center in which you can take classes together as a family such as yoga, martial arts, or Zumba. Learning together as a family offers a great chance to bond.
Get involved in your child’s sport
Play catch in the yard or head down to the local soccer field for some drills. Not only will this help your child get better at the sport but it offers some active time for you as well. Don’t forget about the exercise you can get by running up and down the sidelines cheering.
