What do winemaking and Cyclotrons have in common? The answer is George Hendry. On the one hand, George is known in the Cyclotron Community for the development of biomedical isotope-producing cyclotrons which he has developed successfully for the last 30 years. On the other hand, George is known for bringing meticulous and scientific winemaking methods to an understated ranch in Napa Valley over the same span of time. But whether it’s Particle Accelerators or Napa Valley Zinfandel, one thing that is certain is Hendry is synonymous with quality. Robert Mondavi was quick to see the quality of wine and the talent behind the Hendry Ranch Vineyards, establishing a buyers relationship with George in the mid 1970’s leading eventually in the late 1980’s to Mondavi’s annual purchase of all of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Hendry Ranch, and dividing the Cabernet Sauvignon with Opus One. The remaining Zinfandel was purchased by Kent Rosenblum. This winemaker was no slouch. He was in fact, an astute master of the trade drawing interest from the biggest names in the industry. However, George never received the publicity of a big name Napa producer. Nor did he need it. He was too busy to notice. Balancing wine with Cyclotrons, essentially two companies in very distinct industries, brought stability and also a unique opportunity to support one passion financially through another passion. And with both moral and financial support from his colleagues at Cyclotron, Inc. Hendry Ranch took on new life in the 1990’s. By 1992 George had made the decision to bottle his own hard work leading to the first true vintage of Hendry Ranch Wines which included his Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel and also led to diminishing availability of his high grade grapes for purchase. The success of the wines and the prospect of nephew Mike Hendry continuing the Hendry legacy led to the expansion of vineyard acreage in 1994 following the purchase of the benchlands surrounding Hendry Ranch. By 2000, George and his partners reinvested earnings from wine sales and his Cyclotron company to construct Hendry Ranch Winery. This allowed Hendry to welcome wine lovers from around the globe and showcase the methods and passion from vine to glass. Thirteen years after the construction of the winery, Hendry has become known to wine lovers as a true boutique producer from Napa Valley. George’s personal wine tour, a 2-3 hour tour through the vineyards, winery and tasting room has been called the best wine tour in Napa. The focus of Hendry wines, still remains the importance of the estate.
