Restitution is defined in Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “a making good of or giving an equivalent for some injury”. On the August 27 episode of “General Hospital” there was a lot of restitution going on as injured hearts bled for redemption, forgiveness and payback.
Connie’s death has turned Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) into a mad man. Sonny has pledged restitution in the name of the woman he loves. On Tuesday Sonny confronted AJ about Connie’s death. With anger in his eyes and rage motivating his mind, a heavy hearted Sonny held AJ at gunpoint calling him every name in the book. To Sonny “losing defines” AJ and he was focused on putting a bullet into AJ the same way he is certain AJ put a bullet in Connie. AJ begged Sonny not to kill him and he probably would have if it wasn’t for Michael (Chad Duell). After Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) showed up at the Quartermaine mansion, he told Michael about Connie’s murder and wanted to question AJ. Michael defended AJ and later the two found Sonny holding a gun on AJ. Sonny told them to both let him do what needed to be done but Michael stepped in as the son of both men. He told Sonny that taking AJ’s life would hurt more people that he loved and that he was proud of him as a man, but if he pulled the trigger he would never look Sonny in the eyes again. Michael used Sonny’s famous words, telling him that “he would be nothing to him.” Sonny listened to Michael but it is clear that the pain is just beginning for Sonny who will have to realize that instant payback is not the easiest road towards healing.
Both Franco (Roger Howarth) and Ellie (Emily Wilson) ended up on the hospital roof together in an interesting exchange of dialogue. When Ellie ran into Franco standing on the ledge she told him he shouldn’t be up there because it was not safe. Franco told him that is why he was up there. The two talked about kids which paralleled their situations and connected them as “kindred spirits” in a Franco kind of way. Ellie told Franco she was seeking restitution for the lives she has ruined as a result of holding the truth about Maxie’s baby. She lied to the man she loves and she wants to fix her wrongs. Franco, on the other hand, shared with Ellie his disappointment with having a child kept away from him for twenty-one years and then being told that he is not the father at all. For Franco, Kiki (Kirsten Anderson) and being a donor to Danny was his way of “making good” for the wrong he had done to others. He feels his chances have been taking away. He told Ellie that the best way to make things right was to jump. Ellie told him it was horrible advice and left promising that she was going to fix her life. Later Carly (Laura Wright) showed up on the roof. After Franco told her he “missed the boat on being a father” and therefore lost his path towards redemption, she told him that he could still prove something to her. Carly basically challenged Franco to make her believe he has changed. Will the change attract Carly to a man she claims she is repulsed by, but yet a man she can’t stay away from?
Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) continues to be in pain. On Tuesday’s episode, he talked to Lulu (Emme Rylan) about the baby. As he stood there watching the baby in the nursery, he told Lulu that he “can’t imagine any new daddy wanting to leave the side of his child”. He was referring to Dante being called away on police business but to viewers it is clear Spinelli is referring to himself. He is clearly still hurt and disappointed but there is a growth that has developed within the character of Spinelli, a growth that is referenced by Lulu when she talked about how good Ellie was for him. She also filled Spinelli in on what is happening with Maxie. She told him about the hemorrhaging after the c-section and also how Maxie believed the baby was hers and named Spinelli as the father. Spinelli had to keep a straight face knowing that Maxie was telling the truth and knowing that it is a truth he has now decided to keep away from Dante and Lulu. Later he ran into Ellie who told him that she will not give up on them, but without nothing more to say, Spinelli got on the elevator leaving Ellie behind.
Elsewhere in Port Charles, Kiki (Kristen Alderson) and Morgan (Bryan Craig) searched for Franco. At Crimson, Olivia mourned the death of her cousin Connie. She saw the initials “AJ” written in blood and said she hoped Sonny ended AJ’s life. Olivia also felt guilt because the last time she saw Connie they fought. At the end of the episode, Sonny returned to Crimson to see Olivia being comforted by Alexis as a montage of tears paraded through Port Charles.
