Fatherhood was the focus on the August 29 episode of “General Hospital”. Three men, three different stories but a common theme. All three struggled with different elements of truth and all three took turns being the man of the hour on Thursday’s show.
First let’s start with Julian (William deVry), the man who is pretending to be someone else but can’t completely escape his past because he keeps staring it in the eyes every time he looks at his newly discovered daughter Sam (Kelly Monaco) and his grandson Danny. Julian as Derek Wells is the miracle bone marrow donor for Danny, but no one knows yet that he is actually a match because he is related. On Thursday’s episode, Julian wanted to tell Sam he is her father but his current plans are preventing him. Fatherhood has suddenly brought out the softer side to a man who first arrived as careless, stern and tempered. Most of his softness was shown when he finally got to meet Danny and hold his grandson. He was sweet with Danny and asked Sam about his father and grandfather. Viewers could see the struggle within Julian. He wanted to reveal the truth and be a father. It was a good family scene except for the fact that Sam and Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) have no clue that Julian is the man they’ve been looking for. Later, when they were alone, Julian found out that Alexis was investigating him. She told him that is what she does as a lawyer and it seemed like he was about to come clean at that point. The distraction of paternal instinct is starting to dominate Julian’s focus, but his tenderness and spirit towards Danny showed the kind of man Julian really is.
There is no stopping Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson) when he is in protective father mode. Yesterday he confronted Britt (Kelly Thibaud) about her connection with her mother. Patrick told Britt that he was just starting to trust her and started to believe they could work together as parents. But because her mother “is working with a man who has raged war on Robin’s family”, Patrick doesn’t know how to trust that Britt will keep their unborn son safe. He told her he knows about Dr. Obrecht being at the nurse’s ball and felt that both Britt and her mother were “conspiring to use the baby against him” which is true except Patrick doesn’t know the extent of Dr. Obrecht’s plan and Britt’s part in some of her plan. An angry Patrick vowed that the evil Dr. Obrecht will never come near his son because he will fight for full custody of the baby. This shocked Britt who promised Patrick that she has nothing to do with whatever her mother has done or is planning to do, but Patrick’s persistence that he will fight for the baby and limit her rights triggered her to tell Patrick that the baby is not his son. Will Patrick believe her or think it is just another one of Britt’s lies? Remember there is already a paternity test that reveals Patrick as the father so he may have a tough time believing her.
Maxie (Kirsten Storms) had a nightmare about Lulu (Emme Rylan) taking her baby away. When she woke up and tried to find the baby, Mac (John J. York) was there to stop her and told her about her saying the baby was hers and that the father is Spinelli (Bradford Anderson). Mac told Maxie that there is concern about her because she may be experiencing a postpartum event. Mac told her she is an amazing person for what she did for Lulu and Dante and that she is appreciated for it. The whole time Spinelli was outside the door listening. He is even more conflicted because he knows Maxie is not hallucinating. He feels the same pain because he is now carrying the same hidden truth. Spinelli, as a father, wants to be there for his child but his first instinct as a father is to go into protection mode. The problem is more hurt is being caused by keeping this secret. At the end of Thursday’s episode Maxie was able to sneak out of her room and go to see the baby. Spinelli didn’t say much throughout the episode, but all the expression needed to express his language was carried on his face as his heart dripped with pain.
Elsewhere in Port Charles, Sabrina found Ellie crying. Ellie talked about Spinelli hating her and the lie she kept that is going to hurt a lot of people. Nikolas went to visit his new niece. Lulu told him about her concerns about Maxie being attached and also Spinelli’s sudden interest in the baby. Lulu also warned Nik about Britt and told him about Luke dying and Helena being responsible.
