Fans of PBS’s enthralling historical drama “Downton Abbey” will get a sneak peak at season four on Aug. 31. Ever since season three ended in February, fans have been anxious to find out what happens next. On Saturday, PBS is releasing the full official trailer to give fans a hint at what’s in store for the Crawley family and their loyal band of servants. The new trailer will be posted on the PBS website on Aug. 31.
Since the premiere of “Downton Abbey” in 2011, the critically acclaimed series has gained popularity across a diverse audience and has been honored with nine Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Dame Maggie Smith). It has also garnered a Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries, a PGA (Producers’ Guild of America) Award and a TCA (Television Critics Association) Award.
Last season of “Downton Abbey” was especially riveting with the addition of Shirley MacLaine. Her lively interaction with Maggie Smith enthralled viewers and added a new dimension to the show. When season three concluded, PBS and Masterpiece Theater dropped a bombshell with the shocking death of Matthew Crawley, played by British actor Dan Stevens.
Season four picks up several months after Crawley’s death. “Downton Abbey” faces the year 1921 still mourning his shocking passing. During the premiere, Michelle Dockery, wearing all black as Mary Crawley, must come to terms with her husband’s death. Over the course of the new season, the widow slowly comes back to life and learns to move on. Multiple love interests pursue the oldest Crawley daughter including Lord Gillingham, a longtime friend of the Crawleys, played by Tom Cullen.
Executive producer Gareth Neame is excited about the new season and the future of “Downton Abbey.” “The show is so popular around the world now,” she stated during a PBS press tour. “It’s beloved.” She added that she’s already thinking forward to season five.
“Downton Abbey” returns on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014. The fourth season will run for eight consecutive weeks, with the finale slated for Feb. 23. In the meantime, all three seasons are available on Blu-ray and DVD to catch up.
