From June through August all throughout the turn of the century, radio play of great summer songs became the soundtracks of our lives. Whether we were on the road heading aimlessly to the West, on vacation someplace exotic, or just hanging out somewhere only you could find the pleasure in with the best company around, those summer songs were a quintessential part of our vacation days.
So, naturally, to close off the end of summer ’13, and bid music fans well as they march back into another semester of school, or to the ol’ 9-5 again, we decided to give you 10 of our favorite songs that remind us of summer.
Fall Out Boy – Sugar We’re Going Down
Keeping in mind that these will be in no particular order, just whatever order we feel like, we have Sugar We’re Going Down by Fall Out Boy. If this doesn’t immediately take you back to the days when these guys were on every radio station including the pop ones, then maybe you need to take a little stroll down memory lane and give it another listen.
Taking Back Sunday – A Decade Under The Influence
Remember when they put out this record? TBS went through a lot of changes between this, New Again, and their latest self-titled album, and though the band is back to their original lineup that made their first iconic masterpiece, it’s never really felt like the same band album to album.
Boys Like Girls – Great Escape
There was once a time where you couldn’t switch the channels for more than a minute without catching an earful of this. Now, if you’re lucky, someone’ll request it and it will actually get played. To all you patrons of the good times, keeping our radios semi-listenable with good alt-rock in the midst of the summer pop wonders, we salute you.
Blink-182 – First Date
After Take Off Your Pants & Jacket, Blink completely turned face and made dramatic alterations to who they were. Of course, nobody blames them for getting older and more mature, but the seriousness of their latest work still sort of pales in comparison to their younger goofier selves. Nowhere is that more apparent than on “First Date” which has been the welcome anthem of many a teenage guy.
Green Day – Good Riddance
Good Riddance is one of our more somber choices, but it still invokes those beautiful sunset blues we get only in the summer months. Take it all in boys, August is fleeting, but at least we get some a great solemn tune to make a memorable exit to.
Sugarcult – Memory
This song is an obvious choice for anyone who knows the band. It’s fun, energetic pop-rock, with enough subtly and depth in its lyrics to be called a home run hitter. If you’re not familiar with the band, strap in, hit YouTube, and take a listen while your days of August are still upon you.
Sum 41 – Fat Lip
Another overly obvious choice, but one that’s earned its place on this list. Any fans of punk rock will agree, most of the stupid things they did as kids were to the tune of Fat Lip. In high school, it was the choice background song blaring from the headphones and car radios, and for that we thank the great Sum 41 for bringing it to us.
Simple Plan – I’d Do Anything
Not about to win any awards for most cheerful band of the new century, but Simple Plan did give us some great summer ballads on this one. Arguably their last nearly upbeat masterpiece, Simple Plan’s “I’d Do Anything” certainly finds itself a warm place in our hearts, and every time we hear it, we remember those warm, and sometimes excruciatingly hot days.
The Strokes – You Only Live Once
If this were a top 10, “You Only Live Once” would certainly squeeze itself into a number 2 if not number 1 position. Immediately bringing to mind the joyful, blissful days of youth, “You Only Live Once” is an incredible piece of artistic bliss by one of the most iconic bands in indie-rock. Though that phrase has been regrettably repeated several times this year, we can only say that at least they hit the mark first.
Brand New – Soco Amaretto Lime
And finally, we leave you with what is no doubt, the summer song of the century. Soco Amaretto Lime isn’t exactly the high-octane or even big-energy pop hit as some of the others were on this list, but every time we hear the words “I’m gonna stay 18 forever…” it immediately reminds us of summer.
To all you going off into the world, back to school, to your first semester, or just back to your desk Monday morning, never forget the good music that always seems to bring you back, whenever you start to miss it. We’ll see you next time.
