The second cigar from Felix Assouline Cigars that I am reviewing is the EGO. This was one of the original blends that Felix Assouline first came out with years ago.
The blend is comprised of a Habano 98 wrapper, an Indonesian binder and a blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran filler tobaccos.
The EGO line is available in seven vitolas: Perfect (5×25), Spirit (6.5×54 Belicoso), Trip (6.5×54), Maniac (6.5×56), Attitude (6.5×58), Passion (6.5×58 Torpedo) and the Shot (5×24).
All cigars are packaged in boxes of 30, except the Shot which come in boxes of 100.
For this review, I sampled the EGO Trip, which was supplied to me by Felix Assouline Cigars.
The cigar’s secondary foot band has the name of the vitola and the main band is a straightforward maroon / red background with the name EGO in gold.
The Habano 98 wrapper leaf is reddish / brown in color and is virtually seamless wrapped around the binder. As with the majority of the EGO line, the cigar is box pressed and has a good feel to it.
The cigar is very firm to the touch and there is a strong tobacco aroma coming from the wrapper. The foot has a sweet, grassy scent.
Once that cap is cut, I take a pull on the cigar and found an easy draw and a pre-light flavor of sweet / raisin notes.
The first few puffs give off a good amount of smoke volume, a sharp spice sensation in the sinuses and some sweetness on my lips from the wrapper.
As far as burn characteristics go, the cigar developed a firm gray ash which fell after about an inch and a half. The carbon ring was thin and the burn line was wavy.
The first third of the cigar brought a grassy tobacco flavor along with a slightly bitter, short finish and a spice sensation in the sinuses.
During the second third, the spice sensation mellows and I pick up on a dark roast coffee. There is a smooth mouth feel and a creaminess to the smoke. The finish is longer with unsweetened chocolate notes.
The final third of the EGO Trip brings more of the second third’s flavors. The flavors are good and solid, making the EGO Trip an enjoyable smoke.
Along with the EGO Trip’s I smoked for this review, I had smoked an EGO Perfect while visiting at the Felix Assouline Cigars offices. This was also a great smoke and a great looking perfecto shape.
The Felix Assouline Cigars portfolio is finding its way into more cigar shops so, if you have the opportunity, check out the EGO line. I think you will enjoy it.
