Stumble upon one of Dallas’ hottest local male vocalists and you would assume that he should have an air–an air of entitlement or that of acting too “Hollywood” too soon, but not of the rising star, Larry g(EE). The famed singer of catchy soul hits “Yo Mama” and “Camera Phone” fairs to be the complete opposite…exceedingly humble, down to Earth and just plain likeable. In fact, this charismatic singer-songwriter sensation shys away from getting full of himself and lets his vocal cords and GQ-worthy fashion scream at high enough decibels that all will stop and admire.
A known addict to the world of fashion and recently named as “Best-Dressed” on GQ.com, it was only natural that ventwing.com catch up with the modest musician and find out what he digs most about men’s fall fashion.
ventwing.com: How would you best describe your personal style?
Larry g(EE): Classic with a modern twist. I like mixing up two or three-piece suits with pops of color and patterns, but not going too crazy. You’ll rarely catch me in a t-shirt, but that doesn’t mean I’m not open to wearing one with a blazer every one and a while.
And just when you thought this “fashionisto” was possibly hopping onto yet another fashion bandwagon, think again.
ventwing.com: Have you always been into fashion?
Larry g(EE): For sure. Ever since I saw Michael Jackson rock “the glove” on the Motown 25th Anniversary Special when he performed “Billy Jean”. That was the first time he ever did the moonwalk on national TV! That performance made me realize how passionate I was about pursuing music as a career; it opened my eyes to the marriage between fashion and music. I begged my mom to buy me those socks, shirt and the glove. I don’t sport glitter much anymore, but I still keep my pants cropped like his.
ventwing.com: Can you name any Hollywood celebrities that you admire for their style?
Larry g(EE): I’m drawn to entertainers that marry fashion and music. I’m constantly checking out Pharrell Williams’ Instagram and Mark Ronson has some mad style. This is going to sound hilarious but…whoever styles One Direction is brilliant. Not saying I like their music, but I dig their clothes (don’t hate.)
We will ignore the reference to glitter and part of the One Direction comment but you certainly can’t argue with any musician who pays tribute to his fashion inspiration from the late Michael Jackson. But before you go off thinking that g(EE)’s style is unoriginal, keep reading on. The suave and soulful singer dishes a secret or two about one of his current obsessions: his infamous bow ties.
ventwing.com: A stylish bow tie seems to be one of the Larry g(EE) staples…are there any other must-have clothing items you can’t live without?
Larry g(EE): I like bow ties because of their throwback vibe. I even had a friend of mine at Lola Roux make me a custom over sized velvet tie after seeing Justin Timberlake’s [tie] on Saturday Night Live. I couldn’t live without my navy one-button Zegna blazer or wingtip dress shoes…I have several pairs.
We switched the gears up for a bit and ramped up the conversation chatting about fall fashion with g(EE). As any fashionisto or fashionista would know–in the warmer seasons, it’s all about the layering; something that g(EE) admits to mastering. Exclusively for ventwing.com, famed Dallas photographer Thomas Garza, shot the musician (now turned model) in fall looks by West Village boutique Warehaus to further highlight g(EE)’s obsession with fashion and style.
ventwing.com: What excites you most about fall fashion?
Larry g(EE): Whether it’s hot or cold, I pretty much have the same go-to style. I wear a lot of button-ups, blazers and jeans. In the fall, I just add more layers–like wearing my black moto jacket over my jean jacket, or adding an ascot or scarf.

Larry g(EE): The three-piece Universal Works suit is amazing and can be worn in so many different ways. If I could wear a suit every day, I would.
Simply stated, fashion is a reflection of self. For the men out there who still need a slight nudge in the right direction, Larry g(EE) offers a bit of encouragement.
Larry g(EE): There’s a saying I heard somewhere and that I live by, “Swag is for boys, class is for men.” (Neil Patrick Harris) It’s important to pair classic timeless items with those that are a little unique. I’m minimal on purchasing trends. I draw inspiration from everything from Instagram to Tumblr to GQ. One of the best assets any man can have when it comes to fashion is a good tailor. A good tailored suit will get you far.
Just remember, you read it here first. Class, suits and bowties–Larry g(EE)’s ultimate keys to fashion perfection. You can catch more of Larry g(EE) and his impeccable fashion at his upcoming performance at GrowSouth Jams at the Kessler Theater on October 17, 2013. Who knows? The next time we see him, may be on the runway.
