Health news to squawk about: The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) revealed on August 20 that they have found extensive contamination in chickens, with feces, carcinogens and chemicals typically occurring in almost every bite you take. We followed up and in an exclusive interview, Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) told us: “Consumers should be aware that a U.S. Department of Agriculture training video obtained by the Physicians Committee reveals that the chicken slaughtering process ends with carcasses soaking in cold water-“fecal soup”-for up to one hour before being packaged.” In the August 20 release, PCRM also revealed that half of the chicken samples they tested were positive for fecal contamination.
Americans eat 84 pounds of chicken per person a year, with high protein diets increasingly popular. However, cautions PCRM’s diet experts, the majority of consumers do not know that “feces, toxic chemicals, superbugs, carcinogens, and cholesterol are likely hiding in every bite they eat.” Even more alarming: With more than eight billion chickens slaughtered in the nation annually, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is set to reduce the guidelines that protect consumers in terms of the health of the chicken that they purchase.
And the situation now is not very appetizing. The PCRM “obtained chicken products sold by 15 grocery store chains in 10 U.S. cities and had the samples tested by an independent laboratory. Approximately half of the chicken samples tested positive for fecal contamination,” Dr. Barnard revealed in my exclusive interview. And there’s more: “The dangers hiding in chicken go beyond feces. Recently, a strain of avian influenza was found on an Arkansas poultry farm that supplies birds to Tyson. Although officials from Arkansas and the poultry industry said this particular virus did not pose a threat to humans, it was a strain of the flu virus that killed dozens of people in China. Since then, China, Russia, and Japan have banned imports of poultry raised in Arkansas,” said Dr. Barnard, author of “The Get Healthy, Go Vegan Cookbook: 125 Easy and Delicious Recipes to Jump-Start Weight Loss and Help You Feel Great.”
Another exclusive: PCRM revealed to me that chicken manufacturer Tyson asked them to not post the billboard (see photo). However, PCRM had already signed a contract with the billboard company to post it near the Little Rock airport. The billboard directed motorists to PCRM’s website www.fecalsoup.org where people can see the poultry inspector training video that they obtained from the USDA.
