On November 29, 2013, Record Store Day, Omnivore Recordings will release a Christmas-themed limited edition 10” picture disc titled A Percy Dovetonsils Chrithmath. The EP contains 6 comedic cuts including 5 previously unreleased recordings from the 1952 Kovacs Unlimited TV show. Only 1000 platters were pressed and it is not available online.
Following the 2012 release of the humorous Ernie Kovacs Presents Percy Dovetonsils . . . thpeaks, this recording once again features TV legend Kovacs as one of his most memorable characters Percy Dovetonsils. Complete with animal-print smoking jacket, ever-present martini and his trademark lisp, this refreshing, (now) politically-incorrect character would as they say “wax poetic’ with oft’times “hilariouth rethulth.” “Thide One” opens on “The Night Before Christmas on New York’s Fashionable East Side” from the above-mentioned release which serves as but a mere introduction to Kovacs’ classic character.
The second selection is “Winter Is Almost Nigh Upon Us”. This is the first of the previously-unissued material from Kovacs Unlimited. It is surprisingly largely timeless in the subject matter. It is followed by “Ode To Our First Snowfall” which is cleverly introduced with a subtle instrumental version of the classic “Sparkling Stella”.
“Thide Two” opens on “Ode To The Christmas Shoppers”. This, too, has a familiar instrumental introduction and is performed with Dovetonsils’ downplayed calm. This tribute to commercialism is even injected with a playful poke at the network.
The next number is “The Night Before Christmas On The Eastside”. This is both a fan favorite and a (supposed) follow-up to an earlier, shorter version of the poem. The closing cut is the apropos “Ode To New Year’s Eve” which was actually originally performed a few days after the actual holiday as a recount of the recently-passed celebration and comes complete with a blunder or two and in-character chastisement of the crew.
The material for the bulk of the material here is drawn from 70 year old acetates but the pops and crackles thimply add to the charm of the overall presentation. Indeed, Ernie Kovacs Presents: A Percy Dovetonsils Chrithmath is even today considered to be “the ultimate Kovacs holiday collection” and comes with a download card so listeners can also have a handy digital copy to listen to when they’re on the go shopping for presents and visiting others over the holidays. Check it out, holiday shoppers, after all because “Winter Is Almost Nigh Upon Us” and Christmas is too.
My name is Phoenix and . . . that’s the bottom line.
