Friday night is not to be missed if you’d like to experience some intriguing, genre-busting new music in a beautiful, outdoor setting. The Annual Rhythm and Roots Festival has always been a place where artists who are defining American roots music meet, and this year more than ever, concert-goers can witness the direction where American-born music is headed. All this is provided by dozens of internationally-acclaimed musicians, across three stages.
The Charlestown, RI festival opens on Friday, August 30th at 4:00 pm and showcases several emerging and award-winning, often danceable musicians. The Heritage Stage is featuring performances by top women singer-songwriters and includes sets by Holly Williams, granddaughter of Hank Williams, Sr. and named by People Magazine for the top albums of 2013, Amy Helm (another famous daughter– this time of Levon Helm of The Band fame), Phoebe Hunt, Lindi Ortega, and the incredible vocal talent of Yvette Landry, of whom its been said, “…has the kind of voice that can get grown men into trouble, and make adult women follow her into dangerous places.”
Friday night, the Festival Stage will feature the Grammy-winning Los TexManiacs, followed by turbo-folk artist Briga and wrapping with the powerhouse quintet New Orleans Suspects at 9:30 pm — a cadre of well-known and well-seasoned New Orleans musicians. All is all kicked off by the wild, Grammy-nominated, crowd-surfing cellist, Rushad Eggleston who goes on at 4:00 pm.
And if that weren’t enough to see and hear, the festival is also running a covered Dance Tent on Friday from 4:00 pm until midnight, hosted by Louisiana-born Cedric Watson et Bijou Creole, with sets by Corey Ledet & His Zydeco Band, Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie and the “deathbed ballads meet glockenspiels” American Cajun band Feufollet.
All three tents are running concerts until midnight Friday, for the single entrance price of $45. Charlestown, RI residents (with identification) also get a steep discount, paying only $20 for entry at the gate that night.
And if you miss Friday, don’t despair! The festival will also be going strong from noon until midnight on Saturday and Sunday too. Catch more of the 40+ talents like headliners Taj Mahal, Jim Kweskin, Steve Earle and the return favorites Carolina Chocolate Drops. Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1st there will be FIVE tandem stages running concerts, workshops, and a plethora of family activities. Food, shopping, hiking, and workshops all available with festival entrance and kids 12&under are free with adult. For full artist schedule, please go to: www.rhythmandroots.com.
