The news that everyone was waiting to hear was finally announced Sunday, Aug. 4 in the live special, “Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor”: the actor who will be playing the 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi.
This is a role that everyone has been speculating about since Matt Smith announced he was leaving “Doctor Who,” with some hoping it would finally be a woman this time around (it’s not), and at Comic-Con, Steven Moffat had said that the search had just begun. But was he telling the truth? Well, last week, BBC America announced this live special for the announcement of the new Doctor.
The special, hosted by Zoe Ball, began at 2 p.m., and unfortunately, the wait continued. It began with an introduction about the Doctor and the history of the character as the anticipation reached new heights. Matt Smith spoke about his time as the Doctor and saying farewell, and during it, he kept hinting at a “him,” adding to the building tension. “If I had to pick someone, I’d pick him,” the current Doctor teased. “I’m excited because I know what’s coming, and he’s going to have a blast.” As for Steven Moffat, he revealed he briefly considered this new person last time, and this time, it was right and teased he’s “different from Matt.”
Finally, Ball announced that Peter Capaldi will be taking over the iconic role from Matt Smith at the end of the year. “It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer,” the actor laughed. And here’s a fun fact: Capaldi has already been on “Doctor Who,” in the season 4 episode, “The Fires of Pompeii,” and he appeared in the third season of “Torchwood,” “Children of Earth.” The actor also said, “Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”
Others have chimed in on the casting as well. Moffat has said, “It’s an incendiary combination: one of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television. Peter Capaldi is in the TARDIS!” As for Jenna-Louise Coleman, who plays the current companion, Clara, she has said, “I’m so excited Peter Capaldi is the man taking on the challenge of becoming the Twelfth Doctor. With Steven’s writing and his talent I know we’ll be making an amazing show with an incredible incarnation of number 12. I can’t wait to start this new adventure!”
“Doctor Who” returns for its 50th anniversary special Nov. 23 on BBC America, with Matt Smith still in the role and featuring returns from David Tennant and Billie Piper. Capaldi will be introduced when the Doctor regenerates in the Christmas special at the end of the year. What do you think of Peter Capaldi being the 12th Doctor?
