“Superboy makes the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life in order to stop the universe from falling apart.”
Scott Lobdell (writer of Superboy, Superman and Action Comics) announced the news at New York Comic Con today that Superboy will make the ultimate sacrifice in either Superman or Superboy Issue 25 as part of the “Krypton Returns” November story arc.
Jon Lane Kent, the third strand of DNA (thanks to Harvest) that created Superboy, will return in issue 26 of Superboy to carry on the legacy. As to what capacity is anybody’s guess since issue 26 still has the clone Superboy time travelling with his teammates the Teen Titans according to DC Comics previews.
A hero will fall during this epic adventure! From the solicits of DC Comics’ Superman issue #25
Jon Lane Kent’s origin was featured in Superboy #19. He is the son of Superman and Lois Lane from an alternate reality, not the New 52. He passed away at a young age of 4 of genetic incompatibility. Jon was not actually dead but his parents had no clue at the time. A man named Harvest, time traveller from the future, who declared war on all metahumans from his time, stole his body, revived him and trained Jon Kent in the future to become his soldier. But the unstable DNA in Jon caused him to be placed in stasis. Harvest was hoping to revive Jon when the time was right with the clone Superboy he created.
Superboy will die in the New 52 just as he did in the old Crisis universe, saving the universe from doom. It catapulted him as a fan favorite then as it will hopefully now. The only difference is that that Superboy was eventually revived thanks to the Legion of Super-Heroes. Probably not so here unless the writers have an out and he makes a return someday in the future.
Remember now, Jon Lane Kent is his own species. He is the only Human/Kryptonian in the known universe. What role will harvest play in all this? Do these events happen after Forever Evil concludes? How will these events affect the Titans and will Jon Lane Kent be able don this mantle and cope w/ being the new Superboy?
The past few issues of Superboy were very stale with the H.I.V.E. story arc that seemed to go nowhere. Sales needed a boost and the death gimmick is a good as any to revitalize the franchise. The book is just averaging a little over 20000 in units sold monthly since May and has not been ranked in the top 100 since April of this year. This is the jolt the New 52 Superboy needs and hopefully will bring in new readers. Marv Wolfman is writing issue 26 which co-stars the Teen Titans so be sure to check it out. November looks like an exciting month for Superman fans.
Here is DC Comics’ summary of Superboy issue 25: “KRYPTON RETURNS,” and our heroes have been sent on missions through Krypton’s history to stop H’El from dooming the universe! Superboy’s mission? Stop H’El from tampering with the history of Krypton days before its explosion. But he must also see to it that Kara Zor-El is kept safe and that the forces of the Eradicator don’t get him first.
