We are aware that you don’t like Obamacare. We are aware that you don’t like anything this President does. You can lie and say Obamacare will increase premiums, result in grandma’s death, not ready for prime-time, blah, blah. But here is the reality. Come October 1st, the insurance exchanges are going to open and millions of uninsured Americans will be able to pick from a variety of affordable health care plans. So any notion that you are going to stop the implementation of the Affordable Care Act is pure fantasy. Moreover, any nonsense about delaying it for a year, with the hopes of stopping it isn’t happening either. But if you are willing to shutdown the federal government because of a bunch of extremists in your wing and one in particular who is looking to score political points for a Presidential run, that is on you. But keep a few things in mind.
According to the most recent Gallup poll, only 22% of Americans say they support the tea party – just one percentage point above its lowest level two years ago. There is no question who Americans will hold responsible for a government shutdown. Every American knew President Obama was for Obamacare when they reelected him (and by the way, in 2010 the only reason you gained a majority in the House was because of gerrymandering of key states). So you are not going to win the same battle you lost on Obamacare when the President was elected and on the Senate floor in 2010.
The President has made it clear over and over that he is not negotiating on his signature achievement no matter how hard you stamp your feet. Obamacare is now the law of the land. The exchanges are about to open and the President is not about to dismantle his signature legislation even if you are deadset on shutting down the government. Again, you are deluding yourself to think that a second term President is about to wheel and deal on his signature legislation.
If you don’t come through with a continuing resolution to fund the government and fund Obamacare the polls say you will regret it. As for Senator Ted Cruz, he’s your problem – a reckless elitist who wouldn’t study with anyone who didn’t go to an ivy league school and fittingly doesn’t care if poor Americans can get affordable health insurance. Cruz rode into Congress on his high horse with his presidential ambitions and now has your members at each other’s throats. He is willing to take the U.S. economy off a cliff, send the stock market plunging, and send the global economy into a tailspin to score political points which would ultimately backfire on him – so he’s not so smart afterall.
Moreover, because of extremists like Cruz, your party no longer has anything in common with the party of Lincoln, Reagan, or the Grand Old Party. Indeed, since the 2010 mid-term elections, the surrender of your party to the Tea Party has accomplished nothing except the loss of your identity and the emergence of a more radical, angry, and obstructive bunch of politicians acting like selfish bozos who are now following a 42 year-old whacko-bird around by the tail.
