Daylight Saving Time 2013 ends for most of us in the US next weekend but as the Mexican newspaper, 20 Minutos, reminded readers on Saturday, it started a week earlier for most of Mexico, causing confusion for travelers.
When do we ‘fall back’ and turn clocks back and hour? Which states do not set clocks back an hour?
In most of the US, Daylight Saving Time 2013 ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3. But there are exceptions that cause a lot of confusion. For information on the states that don’t honor Daylight Saving Time and never “fall back” or “spring forward,” click here.
Time change in Mexico.
For frequent travelers to the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, those of us on the West Coast are used to a two-hour time difference. Puerto Vallarta is usually two hours ahead of us, but until next weekend, they are just one hour ahead. That is because they opted not to adopt the extension of early Daylight Saving Time, like we did on the US. For more information on the history of Daylight Saving Time, click here.
Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time
By the way, it is one of the most widespread spelling mistakes, but it is Daylight Saving Time without the “s”, not Daylight Savings Time.
Should we get rid of Daylight Saving Time?
Some say yes, and at least one politician in Florida has pushed for the idea. More on that here.
Fall Back, Spring Forward
Of course, we call remember the old saw, “fall back one hour” this time of year in the fall, and “spring ahead” or “spring forward” in the spring. Most of our gadgets are preprogrammed to change time, but if you are flying with your iPhone or android phone on airplane mode, your phone is not going to know where you are and the time settings could be off.
Here’s the schedule of when you should fall back and spring forward over the next couple of years:
Fall back on November 3
Spring forward: March 9
Fall back: November 2
Spring forward: March 8
Fall back: November 1
Spring forward: March 13
Fall back: November 6
Don’t forget to fall back on Sunday!
But once again, for most of us in the USA, the time change is this coming weekend, Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour before you go to bed. Daylight Saving Time 2013 ends on Sunday.
