All of us give dogs snacks at some point. After all, how can you ignore those big pleading brown eyes and not give in to their persuasion? The question is, what type of snacks do you provide? Certainly you should not provide people foods that can do more harm than good for your pet. For an ample supply of some of the healthiest and best snacks for your dog, contact your local Rockford-area Petsmart or Petco as listed below or one closest to your home and speak to their friendly staff for advice.
Many dogs get sick all the time because of inappropriate treats and snacks. Some have resulted in fatalities because of contaminated foods. Whenever you hear of a recall, refrain from giving your pet that item, return it and contact your vet immediately to find out if your pet will be okay. The most popular treats to give dogs are rawhides and bully sticks.
Rawhides have been around for quite some time and are made from the hide of animals. As such it is not digestible and can cause choking if swallowed whole or in large chunks. Rawhides can also be hazardous by its sharp edges as it passes through the intestines. Dogs eating rawhides should always be monitored in case of injury or choking that could result in surgery to remove. Rawhides also go through quite a process when being prepared for sale, including a chemical process where it is washed with degreasers and detergents then sterilized in hydrogen peroxide. There has got to be something healthier and better for your dog!
Bully sticks on the other hand are digestible and natural treats for dogs. They are a little more costly but contain no chemicals. The bully stick is made from the meat of the cow and not its hide. They are in no way harmful to a dog’s digestive system and good, healthy bully sticks are also odor-free. Because they are dried, they are free of preservatives, colors and flavors. There is little chance of a dog choking on them and they love them. In the long run, they are safer and healthier for your dog. In addition, while chewing on the bully stick, tartar is being removed from the teeth, keeping the teeth and gums clean while improving doggy breath.
Another way to treat your dog with healthy snacks is with items around the home. Although there are many people foods that dogs cannot safely have, there are a select few that are actually safe and nutritious when given in moderation. When your dog looks for a snack, consider keeping thinly sliced carrots in the refrigerator along with green beans, snow peas and celery.
