There is a statement that notes that it is always darkest before the dawn.
On Thursday, September 26th, Atlanta and all entities connected with it experienced the earthly darkness of news of the transition of Mrs. Evelyn Lowery. The wife of civil rights icon Rev. Joseph Lowery is able to do so peacefully after experiencing a massive stroke just a few days prior.
However, the dawn is near, and it is in the form of the celebration of life that is taking place during the upcoming days.
On Monday, September 30th, from 11am-9pm at Cascade United Methodist Church (3144 Cascade Road in Atlanta), the public is extended an invitation to pay respects in the form of the public viewing. The opportunity to pay respects continues on Wednesday, October 2nd; from 9-10:30am at the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel (at Morehouse College), the public is provided a final public viewing. Afterwards, starting promptly at 11am, the formal homegoing celebration is taking place.
During the nearly 70 years of her marriage to Rev. Lowery, Mrs. Lowery’s impact on the betterment of the community, society, and human condition is just as immeasurable. Her focus on stewardship, outreach, and service are remembered and recalled through multiple works and deeds; the following provide a snapshot of her legacy and commitment to service:
- Founder of the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference) Women, Inc. (the partner organization for the SCLC).
- Creator of the annual Drum Major for Justice Awards (which recognizes individuals whose works are grounded in the uplift of humanity).
- Creator of the annual Evelyn G. Lowery Civil Rights Heritage Educational Tour (a program which helps share the stories of the efforts of those of the Civil Rights era).
For those who have an interest in supporting these and related efforts and causes, individual are welcome to make donations (in lieu of flowers) to the following entities:

A spirit of service and stewardship are the main legacies that are a by-product of the work of Mrs. Evelyn Lowery; this coming Monday and Wednesday provide a means in which the greater community can not only lend support and encouragement, but receive a reminder of the call to serve and the importance to heed the call.
Even from a place of human darkness, there is the greater opportunity for spiritual light…
