There is a city in the southern peninsula state of Florida named Cassadaga. It is know as the psychic capital of the world. It has been referred to in movies such as The Vampires Assistant but now the new film by Anthony Diblasi (Dread) has the title of the town that the film is set in.
Cassadaga stars Kelen Coleman as Lily a deaf teacher who loses her sister in a tragic car accident. After some time away she heads to the town of Cassadaga where she can study and work as a teachers assistant. In an attempt to humor some new friends she goes through with a seance to try and speak to her dead sister. Unfortunately she awakens the spirit of a murdered woman who latches to her in an attempt to help find her killer.
The best thing about Cassadaga is most of all the different types of horror films is well represented here. Aside from zombies, you have a well rounded film the deals not only with ghosts and possession but a giallo style slasher element as well. I was truly pleased by the performance of Kelen Coleman who never strays from her character. The relationship between Coleman and co star Kevin Alejandro (Mike) was sort of distraction to the film until the end when it almost seemed as if the character was not needed. The film reminded me a lot of one my my top films of 2012, The Pact but a little less scary. I really enjoyed the serial killer as we get a different take on the Ed Gein mother son relationship we often see. When you see what the killer does to his victims you will understand how seriously good this movie is as one demented thing happens after another.
Cassadaga moves pretty well but does have the occasional flashback issue which takes away from moments of the film. It wasn’t too much of a head turner as Diblasi did a wonderful job of bringing the well written plot from Brian Wood to life. I think many horror fans will get a kick out of this smart and well done film. All the elements are here, blood, torture, a little mystery. There truly was not much I disliked about Cassadaga. It blends a well done story with above average acting into a mix of horror that we don’t’ see combined as much. This is a horror film I would recommend anyone to see.
Cassadaga will be released in select theaters and VOD on October 11th. Cassadaga stars Kelen Coleman (FOX’s “The Mindy Project,” Children of the Corn: Genesis) and Kevin Alejandro (HBO’s “True Blood,” CBS’s “Golden Boy”) and will be available for download across digital providers including iTunes and Xbox, and On Demand across DIRECTV, DISH Network and select cable providers. Cassadaga is produced and written by Scott Poiley and Bruce Wood, and co-stars Louise Fletcher (Showtime’s “Shameless,” The Last Sin Eater), Rus Blackwell and Lucas Beck. It has a running time of 108 min.
