A feather and three pennies are on the jacket cover of The Final Summit by Andy Andrews, which will make you ask the relevance why this is on there. This is just one puzzle in the novel to solve.
The archangel Gabriel appears to David Ponder as a guide and facilitator and not the angel of death with a question he must solve. The question is: “What does humanity need to do, individually and collectively, to restore itself to the pathway toward successful civilization?” The answer must be in two words, and it will save planet earth because humanity is at its own demise due to arrogance, greed, selfishness, ungratefulness and loss of faith, according to Gabriel.
Some of the people who get to help answer the question with David Ponder as he time travels to the final summit are Eleanor Roosevelt, Louis Armstrong, Norman Vincent Peale, Martin Luther King Jr., Joan of Arc and even Fred Rogers. There is light joking banter between Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln as they both recall their experiences to the “black dog,” which is rather amusing.
So who will solve this question? Will it be Og Mandino, Amelia Earhart or Eric Erickson whose story is very intriguing? Is the answer as simple as restore hope or seek wisdom, and can they answer the question before the sands of time run out?
“The tragedy in man’s life is not that he quits; the real tragedy is that he almost wins but never begins his second act!”
“Courage expands the minds and hearts of others in its presence. It is contagious. One person with courage forms an immediate majority, and others are caught up in his wake. When a brave person takes a stand, the spines of others are stiffened.”
There is a reader’s guide at the end of the book, and it would be great for a book club discussion. In Andy Andrews, The Final Summit will leave you questioning what you can do to change humanity.
