We have a big surprise this week at the box office with Gravity falling from the top spot. It was expected that Gravity would dominate the box office at least for another week but after three weeks they were able to fall from the top spot. Three of the top five movies hit double digits for a solid weekend at the box office.
Taking the top spot this week is the premiere of Bad Grandpa (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tctgUr147zA) with $32 million. This is the 2nd highest movie for this series behind the third Jackass movie which premiered with $50.3 million.
Dropping to #2 is Gravity (Clip ‘I’ve got you’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QQGVvt_iW8) with $20.3 million, bringing the 4-week total to $199.8 million. No doubt that this movie will make it over the $200-million mark. With the start of November movies coming out this week, there might be a hit at the box office for this movie, but it had an amazing run and definitely gave it a strong fight for Oscars in February.
Moving down to #3 is Captain Phillips (Clip ‘Pirates Attack’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW0B1DAaBJs) with $11.8 million. This brings the 3-week total to $70 million. The movie was able to top it’s budget and has a chance to hit the $100-million mark, the 2nd movie to hit that mark this month.
Premiering in the #4 spot is The Counselor (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrAXTxNrsi8) with $8 million. The movie had a lot of promise with it’s all star cast, but the confusing plot has kept fans away only giving it at 35% approval on Rotten Tomatoes.
Rounding out the top 5 for the 2nd straight week is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (Clip ‘Recruitment’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQtnQ7Ym0SM) with $6.1 million. This brings the 5-week total to $100.6 million. The movie finally breaks the $100-million mark. This makes it the highest grossing film for September.
As stated many times before, November is perhaps the biggest month for premieres and it starts off with a bang. We have 4 movies coming out this week. The sci-fi movie for people of all ages in Ender’s Game; the cartoon movie of a turkey trying to survive Thanksgiving in Free Birds; the story of 4 lifelong friends coming together to celebrate their friend’s bachelor party in Last Vegas; and the story of a man who gets diagnosed with AIDS and takes it upon himself to find affordable treatment in Dallas Buyer’s Club. I would expect the first two movies to definitely make the top 5, but Last Vegas might fall just short of the top 5. Dallas Buyer’s Club is limited released at first so I wouldn’t expect this to have a big opening weekend.
