Baby, it’s cold outside — so get your boots on! There’s nothing more exciting than walking out your door and feeling the cold, crisp air hit your face like a ton of bricks. OK, in Southern California, it may not go as far as a ton of bricks, per say, but it can get pretty darn cold — yes, under 65 degrees is pretty darn cold.
One way to keep warm, and stay stylish in the cold fall and winter months is buy throwing on a pair of boots. Boots can range from the good ol’ country style, to various heel heights, to flat boots — usually called “riding boots”. It’s a new obsession, and it’s worth going over.
Booties don’t give too much warmth to the leg, or protect it from but, but they sure are cute. There are both flat and heeled booties. In case you’re thinking of pirates right about now, a bootie shoe is a boot that stops at the ankle. It’s more of a fashion statement then a winter essential, but definitely worth mentioning.
Heeled boots can go from wedges to a 6-inch spike heel. The boot shaft — the part that covers the leg — differs in length, from under the knee, to over and even to thigh-high. The statement you want to make depends on the shaft height you go with. A daring night out on the town can call for some thigh-highs. A more professional setting might have you choosing the shaft that ends well before the knee. If you want to spice up a dinner night, go with on-top of the knee or right above.
My all time favorite type of boot is the riding boot. It can be dressed up and kept comfortable all at the same time. You still have options of below, on top or above the knee, but the heel is always kept flat. It’s perfect for running errands in the rain, running around from class to class at school, or going to a more casual work environment. These types of shoes can be adorned with studs, chains, etc. You name it, they’ve got it. Go with a pair that matches your personality. There is sleek and simple, studded and edgy and everything in between.
Ah, the epitome of a boot. Cowboy boots have so many various styles, colors and stitchings to choose from, it all narrows down to personal preference. There are some with a 3-inch heels and some without. Short shafts, long shafts, colors galore. Make sure you try on cowboy boots before purchasing because they do come narrow and the sizing can be a bit different.
No matter which boot you choose, make sure you love it and are comfortable with it. The area around the calves should fit comfortably enough that it doesn’t squeeze your leg. If you’re planning on putting your pants or leggings inside the boots, make sure there is enough room. Also make sure there is protection around the boot (at least a half inch rise) that will protect rain from soaking up your socks — trust me, it can happen.
