This time of year has a multitude of emotions for many. For parents, it’s relief at having their kids back in school. For kids, it’s another opportunity to learn, make new friends, or continually drag their feet to the school bus every morning Monday through Friday.
For those kids who aren’t incredibly thrilled to be going back, or for those who are intimidated by going into a higher grade level, there are books to help them transition into a new year.
Many of these books are geared toward younger grades- preschool, kindergarten, first grade, etc.
For new first graders, the books “First Grade Jitters,” (by Robert Quackenbush), “A Pirate’s Guide to First Grade,” (by James Preller) and “First Grade Stinks!” (by Mary Ann Rodman) are perfect for helping any new first grader feel a little more at home in a new classroom.
Each book not only addresses the fears of entering the first grade, but talks about how children cope with those fears by using their imaginations. These books don’t have to be just for new first graders. They’re great for kids between kindergarten and third grade, since a lot of children may have issues transitioning to new classrooms.
For kids who are transitioning to a new grade and a new school, the book “First Day Jitters,” (also written by Robert Quackenbush) can help quell many of the anxieties children have when they switch schools. It’s no easy task being put in a strange school with unfamiliar faces and expected to adjust to a new curriculum.
