It takes a unique combination strong writing, quality performances to keep people hooked to a TV show, much less for 8 solid seasons. “Bones: The Complete Eighth Season” keeps the action and the laughs going as one of the most beloved crime fighting teams and their family of squints stops the bad guys and get even closer as another year at the Jeffersonian goes by.
In Season 8 and finally cleared of a wrong murder accusation Dr. Temperance Brennan aka Bones (Emily Deschanel) reunites with Booth (David Boreanaz) and their team of squints. Although the team solves some of their most difficult cases to date, madman Christopher Pelant continues his murderous rampage getting closer and closer to Bones, Booth and the entire team on a daily basis. At the same time, if the challenges that Booth has to deal with on a daily basis like parenthood and his unique relationship with the love of his life weren’t enough his mother shows up after a 24 year absence and the squints are constantly full of surprises in 24 action packed and drama filled episodes.
With its unique blend of humor and serious crime fighting action, “Bones” has evolved from your run of the mill procedural to much of more of a unique and fun show, that if you enjoy you’ll have no problem getting behind but can be either taken or left behind. Over the course of 8 years, creator Hart Hanson and his team has made this show just as much about the characters as it is about the crimes they solve and in this season things seem to get all the more personal as proposals, secret love affairs, break-ups and make-ups are flying all over the map. It’s the characters in “Bones” that truly make the show as over the years it has evolved from simply the dynamic between the two leads, to the team dynamic and how they all click together.
David Boreanaz with his square jawed good looks still anchors the action very well while Emily Deschanel has managed to evolve the character very well over the years from stoic scientist adding multiple layers of passion to her character work. The primary team at the Jeffersonian of TJ Thyne, Michaela Conlin, Tamara Taylor and John Francis Daley provide some solid supporting work while the other rotating cast of characters that come in and out of this world fit like a comfortable shoe and after 8 years together they all work together rather smoothly.
Special features on this 5 disc Blu-Ray set include deleted scenes, a gag reel, commentary on select episodes, a mail time session as Bones answers your questions that you were dying to know, and a look at the fan culture behind the show.
At the end of the day, if you are not already a fan of the show it might be a little late to jump in at Season 8, but “Bones” still keeps the crime fighting, murder solving and fun loving team at the Jeffersonian busy enough to delight the fans.
3 out of 5 stars.
