Continuing a pattern of announcing media events at the last minute to avoid allowing other viewpoints to be heard in the “national conversation on guns,” Mayors Against Illegal Guns paid for a press release yesterday to announce planned events by “Gun owners … at Congressional offices, police stations, and city halls nationwide for events in 11 states this week.”
The announcement hardly leaves enough time for gun rights activists hearing about the demonstrations now to mount counter-presences to the events. That is intentional.
It’s not the first time anti-gun groups have used subterfuge to create the impression that ordinary “gun owners” support their citizen disarmament agenda. In February, this column noted how MoveOn.org’s “proud defender of the Second Amendment” Jerry Thompson was considered representative enough to use as the spokesman for a national commercial, but not representative enough to have left a trail on the internet so that any competing “loyalties” he might have could be assessed. Likewise, “Average Joe,” used in a MAIG ad in March, insists he’s a real hunter, but, while enjoying the role of an advocate with national stature, insists on keeping his name to himself. How is that consistent with the New York Daily News referring to him as a “star”?
Why all the secrecy? What are they — and their handlers — hiding?
It’s also not the first time Team Bloomberg has been coy with itinerary dates. This column has documented how they have delayed making public announcements about their “No More Names” bus tour stops until the day before. Somehow though, local media always seem to have resources to send a camera and a spokesmodel to the events, meaning they’re either fortunately ready to deploy on a moment’s notice or, perhaps, they are given plenty of heads-up and are more than happy to keep mum to ensure coverage they approve of.
This not only helps ensure opposing viewpoints will be kept at a minimum, it also helps prevent the embarrassment of a well-funded and publicized national tour being outnumbered at its own events by grassroots activists who then need to scramble just to muster a handful of like minds. That’s a particular worry considering MAIG’s tour stop last week in Richmond managed to draw a grand total of “perhaps 15 local supporters.”
This is all in keeping with other MAIG stealth tactics, such as waiting until public comment periods at city council meetings to bring up items the council then acts on — to preclude having to document intent on meeting agendas, and thus alerting and attracting citizens who might object. Likewise, the Bloomberg group quietly establishing state-level corporate lobbying “action groups” demonstrates a type of activism that could charitably only be described as “sneaky.” With no “real reporters” / “legitimate media” / “Authorized Journalists” informing the public about that, and leaving it to a relatively obscure #justablogger to be the one to make it known to a modest niche readership, the deliberate indifference shown by the Fourth Estate Fifth Columnists can only be charitably described as “common sense press control.” Either that or it can be chalked up to laziness, ignorance and incompetence.
Friendly and receptive media will no doubt be on hand today and tomorrow as Bloomberg’s “gun owners” beg for more restrictions and restraints on the right to keep and bear arms. And they’ll be using long-discredited fabrications, such as “74 percent of NRA members” agree with them, which the media will then dutifully parrot and amplify, even though it’s been over three years since NRA corrected the record on that bit of blatant disinformation.
While the event today in New York at Rep. Chris Gibson’s Kingston office is over, it’s not too late to mobilize in other states for tomorrow and the next day, that is, assuming gun rights advocates think it’s worth their while to put forth an 11th hour effort to counter a dozen or so doctrinaire Bloominoids.

Perhaps a presence by the pro-gun side would be helpful, if for no other reason than to find out just who these “gun owners” are that Bloomberg & Co. are passing off as representative. It’s not like anyone from the press can be expected to maybe do a little digging and find out if they are actually more representative of other interests, with agendas they would prefer to keep under wraps.

Todd Jones may be ATF’s new director, but the path he’s heading the bureau down is decidedly the same old one Holder an Obama want him to stay on.
