Drinking in the desert can have its benefits. For example, take Tolleson based folk-punk band Black Mountain Moonshine: 5 young men whose passion for drinking and music has been stirring up local interest since their formation in July 2013. It all started when Alec Rodriguez (bass, vocals) and Art C De Baca III (drums) – both formerly of punk rock band ST8 48 – hooked up with mutual musical friends Ethan Minney (mandolin, lead vocals), Eric Dent (lead guitar), and Luz Gamino (acoustic guitar, vocals) to form a musical collaboration. During a drinking break at an early jam session, the need for a band name came into dispute. After rejecting an earnest, if misguided, proposition by Ethan (Prince Rupert’s Teardrops, really?) Luz was inspired by the label on his Deschutes Black Butte Porter and mumbled the phrase Black Mountain Moonshine, which immediately struck a chord with the others, and the name stuck. Since that inception, the fiery 5 piece has been busy playing local music venues such as: The Rhythm Room and The Big Fish Pub as well as booking upcoming shows at Club Red/Red Owl (Nov. 9/Dec. 21-battle of the bands finals!), The Rogue Bar (Nov. 25) and Yucca Tap Room (Dec. 13).
Black Mountain Moonshine is a tight, talented band that features all original songs and energetic playing. The band’s songwriting collaborations arrive from sitting in the backyard with acoustic instruments, drinking beers – their beverage of choice, despite the moniker. While Ethan and Luz handle most lyrical duties, the rest of the band brings their respective chops to the musical compositions. Drawing inspiration from bands that meld punk rock with country/folk styles like Flogging Molly, Social Distortion, and local legends Meat Puppets; the band also likes to drink and rock out to the music of other local acts such as Andrew Jackson Jihad, Authority Zero, Moonlight Howlers, “O”, Lawndale High, Elephant Gunn, The Haymarket Squares and Capt. Patrick & The Sloth.
