On Wednesday night’s first episode of “Beverly Hills Pawn,” Yossi Dina owns the extraordinary pawn shop where his team consists of Aria, Cory and Dominique. They handle only the high end clientele and when items come into the shop, they are usually one-of-a-kind, but some are bizarre.
As the episode begins, Yossi is getting an elocution lesson from Aria as to how to pronounce the word authenticity. He is looking for the certificate that belongs to a Peter Maxx painting which will verify it is real.
A man named Chris comes into the shop with lots of ear piercings and has a heavy leather motorcycle jacket from the movie “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” and signed inside by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and he has the certificate of authenticity. He is a producer and needs the money for a new movie production. They put the jacket on a manikin to check it further. The jacket was created by Tony Nowak, who also made the Indiana Jones jacket. The jacket is equipped with a special label and number denoting that it was definitely for the actor and not a stunt person. He is asking $7,500 for the jacket. Yossi bought it for $4,000 in hopes of selling it for $5,000.
Yossi and Dominique are on their way to meet with Rocco Gaglioti, an old buddy of Yossi’s who is in the fashion business. Rocco is about to get engaged and wants an extraordinary ring for his lady. They brought three rings for him to see. The first was an eight carat natural sapphire surrounded by diamonds. Another was a nearly five carat ruby surrounded by a circle of diamonds enabling the light to shine through its magnificence. The third was an exquisite padparadscha, a stone typically found in Sri Lanka, Vietnam and East Africa. It takes on different colorings of pink to orange and never looks the same. Rocco chose the padparadscha, for its uniqueness, as it related to the unique woman he is about to marry. Yossi gave his old friend a great deal for just $30,000. To seal the deal, Rocco gave both of them runway walking lessons and had a few laughs.
A woman came in to see Cory. She had a rock in a plain cardboard box. She told Cory it was from the new “Superman: Man of Steel” movie, with nothing but her word. The prop man just happened to be in a meeting with Yossi, so Cory went to bring him out to check this item. He verified that it was similar to set props, but could have come from any movie and Dan told Yossi not to purchase the rock, and no deal was made.
Actress Fran Drescher came in with her adorable teddy bear-looking dog, Esther. Fran is a neighbor of Yossi and has an organization called Cancer Schmancer that is having an auction. Yossi has a gorgeous necklace that Yossi designed, another beautiful necklace with white and black diamonds and a watch with floating diamonds. She chose the watch and hopes to raise lots of money for cancer screening in its earliest stages; a lifesaver to so many people. Thanks, Yossi!
