Babylon 5 has been FREED… to the UK audience at least via Watch. Warner Brothers came to a deal with UKTV for all 5 seasons of B5. The announcement was posted to their website October 29, 2013.
The shows creator, J. Michael Straczynski said (quote seen here):
“I am thrilled beyond words that Watch has successfully drilled through the walls and allowed Babylon 5 to escape onto television screens throughout the UK TV universe. My thanks to the thousands of fans who made this happen. As noted more than once in the show, Faith Manages.”
Ever Since September 2, 2013, the Babylon 5 fans have been buzzing about getting B5 back in the air in one form or another. It all started from a simple tweet from @straczynski (AKA J. Michael Straczynski).
The initial tweet seemed a bit sad. Babylon 5 had been mentioned on Breaking Bad and Big Bang Theory and Straczynski said that (quote from here):
“… We have apparently become the nerd version of Jeopardy”
And that was followed by, several fans replies lamenting assuring him that the show was great and a few mentioning awaiting more Babylon 5 and even this tweet by @tanisjeremy (quote also seen here):
“@straczynski so it should be generating enough buzz for a movie now, right? #icandream”
Then Straczynski fanned the spark by tweeting (tweet seen here):
“Honestly, if fans want the original Babylon 5 back on the air as more than an obscure reference, then y’all need to get organized and loud.”
Despite the modest 123 Retweets and 36 Favorites, this was heard around the geek globe. Screenshots got posted to other social sites and the idea got passed from Ranger to Ranger until all of the fans were ready for battle. According to UKTV, they were listening to the 4,139 Tweets using the hashtag #FreeBabylon5 and 2,780 likes to the Free Babylon 5 Facebook page.
Watch General Manager, Steve Hornsey said (see quote here) of the Warner Brothers deal:
“The fans’ sheer enthusiasm for Babylon 5 proves what an appetite there is for this iconic series and I’m delighted Watch its exclusive new home. This television epic perfectly matches the channel’s premise of being a unique viewing destination that provides out-of-this-world programming.”
Babylon 5 will join a line-up that includes “Doctor Who”, the ”Doctor Who: Revisited” series, and “Torchwood”.
This is a step in the right direction but the US fans are still left wanting. The fans will not give in until the US gets satisfaction. The K’tok has been drawn, the Denn-Shah had been declared, and we will keep fighting until we the US gets it’s Babylon 5 fix.
