On Saturday, October 5, Aspire PAC will present a Broadway Master Class with Nathaniel Stampley, who has performed on Broadway in Disney’s The Lion King (Mufasa), The Color Purple, and Porgy and Bess (Robbins, u/s Porgy), and is set to play Porgy in the show’s upcoming National Tour. Each student will have the opportunity to perform a song and receive direct feedback and instruction from Mr. Stampley, as well as participate in exercises focused on character-building and development. Students will also learn a new song and work to develop and perform their own scenes and song interpretations. The session will conclude with time for Q&A with Mr. Stampley about auditions, performance, and the business of Broadway.
“I think one of the most important things that we can do as a society is to invest in the next generation of artists,” Mr. Stampley said. “When we share what we know, everyone can benefit. I love working with young artists. They remind me of why I love the arts— anything is possible!”
The Broadway foray continues Saturday, October 19, with a Broadway Master Class led by Dierdre Friel, who recently starred on Broadway in Leap of Faith and off-Broadway in Dogfight (Second Stage) and Golden Age (MTC). Ms. Friel will lead an exciting workshop focused on acting technique and monologue performance. Each student will perform a prepared monologue and receive coaching from Ms. Friel on character as well as presentation.
Despite her busy performance schedule, Ms. Friel said nurturing the next generation of artists and arts lovers is one of her top priorities. “I have been lucky enough to have many opportunities to pursue my artistry in this industry, but the best part has been the doors it has opened to work with young people and open their lives up to the arts!”
Aspire PAC’s Fall 2013 Workshop Series will also include a series of one-day workshops focused on the skills needed to excel in musical theatre, including song and monologue performance, character development, improvisation, and audition techniques and tricks. All Aspire PAC workshops include the opportunity for each student to be coached on an individual basis by professional actors, directors, music directors, and choreographers.
