Highly successful students bring with them a plethora of skills and experience at helping themselves in whatever environments in which they have previously thrived. However, in transitioning to college they do not wish to have to engage guerrilla tactics for success. Rather, they would much prefer to invest their time and money in colleges and universities where the experience will be overwhelmingly supportive and positive. Having discussed this way a plethora of parents reviewing colleges, their responses are as follows. They are interested in colleges and universities with:
- A generally high quality program regarding specific interests.
- Specific educational experiences, internships, corporate relationships, or other in which you are interested.
- Diversity of educational content and student interests.
- Low student:faculty ratios (e.g., less than 15:1) with 90 percent of classes taught by PhD’s in classes of fewer than 35 students.
- Teaching staff that is freely and regularly available to tutor and mentor students.
- The ability to demonstrate that they actively support a high level of success and timely graduation by all of its students.
- The ability to demonstrate that they are very successful at preparing students to be highly competitive regarding application to graduate school programs. Moreover, they can identify their particular role in the process separate from independent preparation by students themselves.
- Preferred student demographics.
- An environment consistent with their social values.
- Exciting sports, cultural/arts, community/social activities both on campus and immediately surrounding the college if of interest to the student or pertinent to the student’s skills. The communities are also safe and supportive of the entire student body (e.g., no evidence of prejudicial behavior by the community, including local law enforcement, towards minority elements/groups in the student bodies).
Students and parents recognize that college will be a location at which the students live for four years. The intent is to find that which meet your objectives in quality environments.
Remember too, when you walk into a retail store, the only qualifications of relevance are your ability to pay for products (including via coupons, discount codes, rain check sales prices, etc.; all equivalent to grants and scholarships) and products of interest being available. You determine if the products are of the type, quality and at the price you desire. If the products are chronically limited in availability, maybe you choose something else. Likewise, your most preferred college/university openings may be very limited compared to the number of applicants. That does not mean the products then choose the customers; the students still complete the applications. Instead, apply where the school qualities, accessibility and prices are conjointly right for you.
