Anquan Boldin said on Tuesday afternoon how the training camp and preseason will help he and Colin Kaepernick find a connection. Even though Boldin has been making plays throughout OTAs and training camp, he said it isn’t easy to just start working with a new quarterback right away.
“There is something [special] in breaking in a quarterback,” said Boldin. “Everything doesn’t come overnight. The early success in practice is sign of how good the quarterback is.”
Boldin talked about Kaepernick’s athleticism being overlooked at times by opponents. During the NFC Championship game last year, the Falcons were looking primarily at defending Kaepernick on the read-option but it backfired as he gave the ball to Frank Gore and LaMichael James more times than not. James and Gore combined for 124 rushing yards and three touchdowns in that game.
For Kaepernick, he said the bond between the wide receiver and quarterback are essential in football.
“Chemistry is the most important thing [when being a teammate],” said Kaepernick. “If the wide receiver and quarterback aren’t on same page, there’s really no play that will work out well.
Kaepernick has enjoyed the veteran advice from Boldin. He says Boldin gives another perspective on his game and helps him adjust any mistakes if needed.
“Anquan Boldin makes things easier on quarterbacks,” said Kaepernick. “He’s a savvy guy and knows the weak spots in an opposing defense. His perspective [from a wide receiver point of view] can read defenses at what they’re trying to find in a quarterback.”
Boldin has shown in training camp and spring practices that he should be the number one receiver for the team this year. The 32-year old veteran has big shoes to fill with Michael Crabtree tearing his Achilles tendon last spring.
For the preseason, Boldin is eager for some in-game action with his new teammates. He hopes to continue practicing with the 49ers in preparation for the regular season.
“I’m look forward to preseason,” said Boldin. “The more snaps you get, the chemistry is better. The more you practice, the more confidence you have and you want to get comfortable with everyone else.”
-Colin Kaepernick said A.J. Jenkins has been looking good and that he has high expectations for him.
-Kaepernick also said his approach to this training camp as the team’s undisputed starting quarterback is no different than last year. His work and practice is the same.
