Adam Levine showed off his buff physique in a revealing Instagram photo posted by his wife, Behati Prinsloo, a Victoria’s Secret model. In the snapshot, Levine struts down a hallway wearing nothing but dark shades and black underwear.
Shortly after the photo was posted, throngs of fans tweeted their appreciation at the Maroon 5 frontman’s sculpted body. Not surprisingly, the chiseled Levine eats well and works out almost daily.
Adam has been practicing yoga since 2006, and credits the workouts for keeping his body in top shape. Levine also said a mostly vegan diet keeps him ripped and youthful.
The age-defying effects of vegan and vegetarian diets are no surprise to Dr. David Katz, director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center.
“A diet of minimally processed foods close to nature — predominantly plants — is decisively associated with health promotion and disease prevention,” said Dr. Katz, author of Disease-Proof.
Dr. Neal Barnard agrees. “Studies suggest that free radicals [toxic molecules that form in the body] contribute to aging,” Barnard wrote in his book, the 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart. “A vegan diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, is full of antioxidants which help protect the body from damage by free radicals.”
‘Yoga Has Made Me More Successful’
Levine previously lifted weights but says he hated how bulky it made him. “Weights made my neck thick, and I would be like, ‘I’m turning into a monster!’ ” Adam recounted.
“Yoga carves you into a different person, and that is satisfying physically. I had been lifting weights for years. After our first yoga session, I vowed never to lift another weight again.”
Levine says doing yoga has improved his life in every way and has even made him more successful. “[Yoga has] made me more successful,” he gushed. “I love it and don’t know what I’d do without it.”
The lanky 6-foot Adam, who weighs a wiry 165 pounds, says yoga has enabled him to better channel his nervous energy. “I have a hard time sitting still,” he said. “I can be all over the map. Yoga has given me the ability to be more focused and make better decisions that come from a clear place.”
Levine does an hour of yoga every day whether he’s at home or on the road, calling the daily conditioning workouts an investment in his happiness.
For me, that’s a form of meditation. [It’s] an investment in happiness for the rest of my life.”
In addition to emotional benefits, Levine loves how yoga transformed his body and gets annoyed by people who say they only do yoga for its psychological conditioning.
“I don’t like how people bullsh*t about how yoga is not about vanity,” he said. “I have always been on the slender side. When I started practicing I instantly felt more sculpted.”
Yoga promotes natural weight loss by reducing stress, building lean muscles and suppressing appetite, said Christina Brown, author of The Yoga Bible.
Levine, who’s frequently on tour, says yoga is a convenient workout because it doesn’t require special equipment.
“You don’t need anything but a few feet of space and a mat,” Adam said. “And I can always find at least an hour a day to practice. Yoga will drastically improve you in every way imaginable.”
